  • Associations of Sex Work Modality Classifications with Condom and Substance Use Behaviors Among Women Who Exchange Sex for Drugs or Money – Four Metropolitan U.S. Cities, 2016

Kiva F Tinglof, Senad Handanagic et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2026•References: 1

Women who exchange sex for drugs or money (WES) are disproportionately affected by HIV, particularly in the United States. We used latent class analysis to identify distinct groups, or classes, of sex work modalities (ways in which women find their exchange sex partners) and assess differences between class membership and behaviors associated with HIV transmission. Data are from the 2016 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) cycle focused o…

  • The role of Namibia Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme in strengthening the public health workforce in Namibia, 2012–2019

Open Access•Kofi Nyarko, Leigh Ann Miller et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

Namibia faces a critical shortage of skilled public health workers to perform emergency response operations, preparedness activities and real-time surveillance. The Namibia Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (NamFELTP) increases the number of skilled public health professionals and strengthens the public health system in Namibia. We describe the NamFELTP during its first 7 years, assess its impact on the public health workforce …

  • Evaluation of the uptake of tuberculosis preventative therapy for people living with HIV in Namibia

Open Access•Clay Roscoe, Chris Lockhart et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

In this study, only 1 in 5 eligible PLHIV completed the TPT cascade in Namibia. Lack of training, irregularities with TB screening and timing of TPT, unclear prescribing and recording responsibilities, and a clinical misperception may have contributed to suboptimal programmatic implementation. Addressing these challenges will be critical with continued TPT scale-up

  • Burden and characteristics of HIV infection among female sex workers in Kampala, Uganda – a respondent-driven sampling survey

Open Access•Wolfgang Hladik, Andrew L Baughman et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

One in three FSW in Kampala is HIV-infected, suggesting a severe HIV epidemic in this population. Intensified interventions are warranted to increase condom use, HIV testing, STI screening, as well as antiretroviral treatment and pre-exposure prophylaxis along with measures to overcome gender-based violence

  • Tracking Varicella Deaths

Karin Galil, Mark J Pletcher et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2002•References: 6

Before widespread vaccination, varicella infection resulted in more than 11 000 hospitalizations1 and 100 deaths annually in the United States.2 Since vaccine licensure in 1995, varicella incidence has decreased markedly.3 Mathematical models have predicted that vaccination will shift the peak incidence of disease to older ages as the incidence declines.4 Because older persons are at increased risk of morbidity and mortality from varicella,5,6 it…
