Brief Report
Mastery is the extent to which one believes their own outcomes are under their control and is an important coping mechanism in negotiating difficult life circumstances. Furthermore, increased mastery may lead to greater psychological functioning. It was hypothesized that mastery would moderate the relationship between stress on depression among mothers living in poverty (N = 2256). Although stress predicted depression among mothers with low and h…
Socioeconomic Predictors of Mastery Among Mothers in Poverty
Predictors of mastery among low-income mothers of children eligible for Early Head Start (N = 2093) were examined. Participants' levels of mastery were assessed approximately 14 months after the birth of their child. Mothers living in extreme poverty did not exhibit lower levels of mastery when compared to other mothers when controlling for other socioeconomic factors. African American mothers showed the highest levels of mastery, and single moth…
Hookups and Sexual Regret Among College Women
Research has suggested that women are prone to sexual regrets of action. In the present study, the authors examined "hooking up" as a predictor of sexual regret in 152 sexually active college women. Results indicate that two sexual behaviors were particularly predictive of participants' regret: (a) engaging in sexual intercourse with someone once and only once and (b) engaging in intercourse with someone known for less than 24 hr. Noncoital hooku…
Maternal age and depressive symptoms in a low‐income sample
In this study, depressive symptoms of 2,011 European‐American, African‐American, and Latina low‐income mothers at approximately 14 months after birth of the child were examined. Maternal age was used as a predictor of depressive symptoms. Overall, 31.9% of mothers were classified as depressed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Younger mothers tended to have more depressive symptoms among European‐American mothers only.…
Sex for You, But Not for Me
The purpose of this study was to determine if undergraduates (N = 839) apply the same standard to themselves when labeling a behavior "having sex" as they apply to their significant others if those persons engage in the same behaviors outside the relationship. Using a between-participants design, one form asked participants if each of 11 behaviors constituted having sex if they engaged in the activity; the other form asked participants if each of…
Adolescent and adult low‐income mothers
This study examined the living situations and self‐perceived needs and resources of 2,121 low‐income teen and adult mothers. African American and teen mothers were more likely to coreside with grandparental figure(s) than other ethnicities and older mothers. European American mothers and adult mothers were more likely to be living with a partner. While controlling for living situation and ethnicity, teen mothers indicated greater resources than a…
