Spirituality and Health: The Development of a Field
Spirituality has played a role in health care for centuries, but by the early 20th century, technological advances in diagnosis and treatment overshadowed the more human element of medicine. In response, a core group of medical academics and practitioners launched a movement to reclaim medicine's spiritual roots, defining spirituality broadly as a search for meaning, purpose, and connectedness. This commentary describes the history of the field o…
Poverty and adolescent depressive symptoms
Longitudinal data on non-Hispanic White children from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (N = 1,056) were used to examine whether the relationship between poverty (early childhood poverty, poverty persistence, and current poverty) and adolescent depressive symptoms (measured by the Children's Depression Inventory and the Internalizing Index) can be explained by the mother's own childhood depression and family characteristics measured during the c…
Gender Differences in the Prevalence of Same-Sex Sexual Partnering: 1988-2002
This article proposes that recent normative, economic and legal changes in the United States have made it more likely for American adults, especially women, to select a sex partner of their own sex. Data from the GSS and NHSLS (n = 18,170) were used to examine gender differences in trends in same-sex sexual partnering between 1988 and 2002. The proportion of both men and women who reported having had a same-sex sex partner in the previous year in…
Welfare, Premarital Childbearing, and the Role of Normative Climate: 1968-1994
Nationally representative, longitudinal survey data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics were used to examine the conditions under which welfare benefit levels affected the likelihood that low-income women age 15-24 bore their first child prior to marriage. Benefit levels had a positive effect on premarital childbearing during the 1980s and early 1990s but not during the 1970s or late 1960s. The effect of benefit levels was also stronger where…
Russian Family Policy in Transition: Implications for Families and Professionals
Russia's political transition from a totalitarian system to a fledgling democracy has brought Russian families new legal rights, at least on paper. The 1996 Family Code gives parents the right to rear their children as they think best rather than in the manner directed by official state ideology. However, parents face a number of obstacles in realizing their new rights in contemporary Russia. These include traditional ways of thinking about child…
Trends in Same‐gender Sexual Partnering, 1988–1998
Nationally representative data from the General Social Surveys indicate that from 1988 to 1998 there was an increasing likelihood that American men and women had had a same‐gender sexual partner during the previous year. Increases in same‐gender sexual partnering and decreases in exclusively opposite‐gender sexual partnering during the previous 5 years were also evident among women over the 1988–1998 period. Same‐gender sexual partnering was foun…
The Effect of Welfare Benefit Levels on Poverty among Single-Parent Families
This study addresses the question of whether higher welfare guarantees (maximum benefit levels) perpetuate the poverty of poor families, or whether they enable poor families to climb out of poverty. To this end, I use event history analysis to examine whether the size of the AFDC guarantee (a policy variable) affects how quickly single-parent families escape poverty. I also explore whether the effect of the AFDC guarantee varies by the route out …
The Impact of Social Welfare Policies on Self-Initiative and Family Structure: The Case of Poland
Over the past several decades, Polish social welfare policy (broadly defined) has developed into a comprehensive system, creating the potential for unintended negative consequences as well as the intended benefits. This article examines the extent to which the Polish experience is consistent with controversial hypotheses concerning the impact of social welfare policies on individual initiative and family structure. The abrupt changes currently ta…
The Changing Economic Consequences of Teenage Childbearing
Recent shifts in economic and social conditions have put young women who begin their childbearing as teenagers in an increasingly precarious economic position. In this article, I use a nationally representative data set to examine how the effect of teenage childbearing on women's economic well-being changed during the period 1968-87. A review of the literature on the consequences of teenage childbearing and changing economic conditions provides a…
