  • War‐Zone Trauma and Stress‐Related Symptoms in Operation Desert Shield/Storm (ODS) Returnees

    Open Access•Patricia B Sutker, Madeline Uddo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1993•References: 32

A growing literature suggests that human beings are often negatively impacted by participation in military combat, but there have been few attempts to document the psychological effects of war stress in the masses of troops deployed to action. We chose to study the relationship of Operation Desert Shield/Storm (ODS) participation and symptoms of psychological distress in a comparison of 215 Army National Guard and Army Reserve troops who were act…

  • Mmpi Profiles of Veterans of WWII and Korea

    Open Access•Patricia B Sutker, Albert N Allain•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

MMPI profile patterns were compared between combat veteran groups of 168 POW survivors and 67 servicemen who were not war captives in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Results confirm previous reports that the scales, Hypochondriasis (Hs), Depression (D), and Hysteria (Hy), are characteristically elevated among former POWs. Findings also point to the contribution of scales, Psychasthenia (Pt), Paranoia (Pa), and Ego Strength (Es), in differentiating …

  • Person and Situation Correlates of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Pow Survivors

Patricia B Sutker, Franlynn Bugg et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1990

131 former POWs assigned PTSD diagnoses were distinguished from 62 of their nondiagnosed counterparts by greater stressor severity reflected in measures of confinement weight loss and psychological and biological hardship as well as person characteristics of less socioeconomic advantage and lower military rank

  • Chronic Illicit Drug Abusers

    Open Access•Patricia B Sutker, Anne T Patsiokas et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1981

The hypothesis that female illicit drug abusers are more psychologically deviant than their male counterparts was explored by comparing groups of 121 male and 33 female therapeutic community residents on single and global measures of psychopathology and person characteristics relevant to drug abuse. Groups did not differ on such potentially confounding variables as education, intelligence, time in treatment, and ethnic composition. Gender groups …

  • The Use of Psychological Test Data to Predict Open-Heart Surgery Outcome

    Dean G Kilpatrick, William C Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1975

In an attempt to predict survival of open-heart surgery, particularly among high risk subjects who undergo extra-corporeal circulation [ECG] using pump oxygenation perfusion, a preoperative battery including intellectual, personality and neuropsychological instruments and also ratings of cardiac impairment, was administered to 15 control [cardiac surgery without ECG] and 72 experimental [ECG] subjects. Subjects were divided into survivor [S] and …

  • MMPI Indices of Personality Change following Short- and Long-Term Hospitalization of Heroin Addicts

    Open Access•Patricia B Sutker, Albert N Allain et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1974

The present investigation examined test-retest MMPI profile patterns for two highly similar groups of hardcore heroin addicts: 30 clients admitted to 6-mo. hospitalization in the NIMH Clinical Research Center, Fort Worth and 28 addicts confined approximately 6 wk. in an inpatient hospital setting. MMPI changes following hospitalization were characterized by decreases in scale scores on almost every clinical scale with higher elevations on scales …

  • Incarcerated and Street Heroin Addicts

    Open Access•Patricia B Sutker, Albert N Allain•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1973

This investigation examined the personality characteristics of unincarcerated street addicts as compared with two groups of prisoners: those admitting a history of heroin addiction and inmates who had never experimented significantly with opium derivatives. Although the three groups did not differ on such variables as age, education, or level of intellectual functioning and were markedly antisocial as measured by felony convictions and test indic…
