Subjective Reports and Postural Performance Among Older Adult Passengers on a Sea Voyage
We sought to evaluate changes in subjective experience and postural performance among older adult passengers during the first 2 days of a sea voyage. On a vacation cruise, volunteer passengers gave verbal ratings of subjective bodily stability and awareness of ship motion followed by performance on the tandem Romberg test while facing fore-aft and athwartship. Data were collected when the ship was at the dock and on each of the first 2 full days …
Length Perception by Dynamic Touch
Two experiments investigated the effects of age and experience on length perception. A total of 46 participants were asked to wield and estimate the length of unseen rods by adjusting a movable board to equal their estimate of the reachable distance of the rod. The results demonstrated that (a) participants used the haptic subsystem of dynamic touch to perceive dissimilarities in object length and (b) experience playing racquet sports was more in…

The Effect of Aging on Adaptive Eye-Hand Coordination
Perceptual-motor adaptability of older adults (65 and older) was assessed. Participants in two groups (younger, 20-36 years, and older, 67-87 years) pointed 100 times at a straight-ahead visual target while looking through laterally displacing prisms, with the hand visible early in the pointing movement. Aftereffect tests were administered after adaptation. Each group was then split into decay and readaptation subgroups in which respective treatm…

Task Constraints and Functional Motor Performance of Individuals With and Without Multiple Sclerosis
The interaction between informational support or task constraints and functional motor performance was explored using kinematic profiles of the arms and hands of 40 participants with and without multiple sclerosis (MS). Three functional tasks were performed under three conditions: impoverished (i.e., participants mimed the tasks), partial (i.e., participants mimed the tasks with a limited array of the objects normally used), and natural (i.e., pa…
Optical Flow, Spatial Orientation, and the Control of Posture in the Elderly
Stabliographic techniques were used to better understand the role of the visual system in the perceptual motor activity of older people as it relates to the maintenance of postural control. The central research question was to determine the sensitivity of the subject's visual system to changes in three standard conditions of optical flow generated by an experimental moving room. Any movement that was present as a function of this optical flow fie…

Constraints on Leisure
Children's play and the processing of information
Levels of novelty and complexity in two toy puzzles were manipulated to test an arousal‐seeking theory of play. Preschool children played with either a simple or complex toy puzzle; fifteen‐minute sessions of play and task‐oriented behaviors were videotaped and assigned to one of nine behavioral categories. Differences in duration to puzzle solution were found to be a function of complexity level, and of prior exposure with the same or different …
