Rozważna i romantyczna”: O wrażliwościach antropologii społeczno-kulturowej
‘Forced cultivation?’: Faces of acceleration in Polish community gardens
Community gardens are often projected as alternatives to individualism, neoliberalism and social acceleration. We interrogate these imaginaries through the practicalities of gardening, particularly gardeners’ relationships with soil, by focusing on the disjunctive temporalities of community gardens in Poland. Specifically, we explore how these gardens promote ‘forced cultivation’, understood as culturally and politically motivated interferences w…
Labor, Work, and Action in Polish Community Gardens: Interlaced or Disconnected
Widely considered a socio-ecological innovation, the community garden may appear a model for better human-environment relations. This article draws attention to the work needed to grow a garden and applies Hannah Arendt’s framework to demonstrate that labor, work, and action are predominantly disconnected in Polish community gardens. Their separation prevents most community gardens from becoming vehicles of urban sustainability. Yet they have an …

Alternatywne wizje dobrego życia. Wprowadzenie
The Art of Green Maintenance: Future-Making in Urban Gardening
Urban gardening plays a major role in how sustainable futures are imagined and envisaged, but the focus on its innovative potential tends to obscure the diverging logics at play. We draw upon ethnographic fieldwork at the community garden Onkraj gradbišča in Ljubljana, which was conceptualized primarily as a social and cultural innovation. Yet, it continuously called for maintenance and care practices in which the organizers and the gardeners had…

Migrants’ Everyday Life and Migration Regimes: A Study of Migrants’ Leisurely Use of Urban Parks
The article’s aim is to demonstrate how migration regimes tacitly operate at the level of everyday practices. We propose to see migrants’ leisure, recreational use of parks in particular, as a venue for the internalization and embodiment of migration regimes. We seek to explore if migrants negotiate and resist these regimes through their everyday practices. Our study is based on 70 interviews with Ukrainian and Vietnamese migrants in Poland, Moro…
Ignorance as an Outcome of Categorizations: The “Refugees” in the Polish Academic Discourse before and after the 2015 Refugee Crisis
The article addresses the issue of the so-called refugee crisis in Europe from the perspective of ignorance studies and seeks to establish the mechanisms whereby ignorance is created through categorizations. We depart from the proposal of Proctor and view ignorance as either “native state,” “lost realm,” or “strategic ploy.” In all three, ignorance is an unalienable part of social action. The case of Polish academic research on refugees before an…
Natural Environments and Leisure among Rural–to–Urban Immigrants: An Application of Bourdieu's Concepts of Habitus, Social and Cultural Capital, and Field
This study explored the use of natural environments for leisure among rural-to-urban immigrants by adopting Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, social and cultural capital, and field. Data were collected with the use of individual interviews with 27 participants, including Mexican immigrants in the United States, Ukrainian immigrants in Poland, Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands, and Turkish immigrants in Germany. The findings showed that for som…
European Anthropologies
In what ways did Europeans interact with the diversity of people they encountered on other continents in the context of colonial expansion, and with the peasant or ethnic ‘Other’ at home? How did anthropologists and ethnologists make sense of the mosaic of people and societies during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when their disciplines were progressively being established in academia? By assessing the diversity of European intellectual …
Changes in recreation participation in natural environments after immigration among immigrants in the U.S., Netherlands, Germany and Poland
This study examines the use of natural environments for recreation among immigrants and factors that led to changes in their use of natural environments between home and host countries. The data were collected through individual interviews with 13 Latino and 13 Chinese immigrants in the U.S., 15 Ukrainian and 11 Vietnamese immigrants in Poland, 9 Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands and 9 Turkish immigrants in Germany. The findings show that ch…
Immigrants' Adaptation and Interracial/Interethnic Interactions in Natural Environments
This study examined the role of leisure in natural environments in immigrants' adaptation, with a particular emphasis on facilitating interracial/interethnic interactions. Berry's adaptation framework was used as a theoretical framework. The project used in-depth individual interviews with 70 immigrants from China, Latin America, Morocco, Turkey, Ukraine, and Vietnam residing in the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland. The finding…

Historical blueprints of tourists’ paths from Poland to the former USSR
This article is a contribution to the developing body of research on tourism within the region of the Central and Eastern Europe. Our aim is to explore if and how Polish tourists to the former Soviet Union incorporate a historic past in their imaginaries. Sixty interviews carried out between 2008 and 2012 are analysed in order to establish if there are references to the past in tourist accounts although the fact history was not a major travel mot…
Finding one’s way: Recreational mobility of post-2004 Polish migrants in West Midlands, UK
In migration studies, relatively little attention has been paid to leisure. This article aims at contributing to this field. It analyses how migrants’ leisure, identity and uncertainty linked to migration experience are intertwined. The study is based on materials of a year-long field research that was carried out in the West Midlands, UK, among post-2004 Polish migrants. The material was collected through participant observation and interviews. …

Construction of Self and the Other in the Accounts of Polish Travellers to Post-Soviet Countries
Travel is one of the important modes of identity construction. It is influenced by individual choices as well as by macro-contexts of institutional practices and changes. Based on the study of the accounts of young middle-class Polish travellers to the former Soviet Union countries, this article attempts to demonstrate the ways in which macro-processes of systemic transformation and European integration affect the identity-building processes. Aft…
Mapping Europeanist Research
There are two meanings attached to the concept ‘Europeanist’ when applied within the boundaries of our discipline. The term can be used to refer to the practice of anthropology in Europe (e.g. Grillo 1980; Macdonald 1993). This usage primarily indicates the region where fieldwork and research is carried out, as when we label other such fields of anthropological practice ‘Africanist’ or ‘Americanist’. It is thus a mere indication of the regional f…
