  • Do social relations buffer the effect of neighborhood deprivation on health-related quality of life? Results from the LifeLines Cohort Study

    Open Access•Bart Klijs, Carlos F Mendes De Leon et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 8

We investigated whether social relations buffer the effect of neighborhood deprivation on mental and physical health-related quality of life. Baseline data from the LifeLines Cohort Study (N=68,111) and a neighborhood deprivation index were used to perform mixed effect linear regression analyses. Results showed that fewer personal contacts (b, 95%CI: -0.88(-1.08;-0.67)) and lower social need fulfillment (-4.52(-4.67;-4.36)) are associated with lo…

  • Neighborhood income and major depressive disorder in a large Dutch population: Results from the LifeLines Cohort study

Open Access•Bart Klijs, Eva Kibele et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

Living in a low-income neighborhood is associated with major depressive episodes. Our results suggest that this association is partly explained by chronic diseases, lifestyle factors, stress and poor social participation, and thereby partly confirm conceptual model 1. Our results do not support conceptual model 2 and 3

  • Intergenerational proximity and the residential relocation of older people to care institutions and elsewhere

Open Access•MARIEKE VAN DER PERS, Eva Kibele et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 72

We investigated the extent to which the geographic proximity of adult children affected the relocations of older people in the Netherlands in 2008. A major contribution of this study is the examination of the differentiation between relocation to care institutions and elsewhere. Data from the Dutch population register linked to complementary datasets were analysed for nearly one million inhabitants aged 75 and above, using multinomial logistic re…

  • Regional Mortality Disparities in Germany: Long-Term Dynamics and Possible Determinants

    Open Access•Eva Kibele, Eva U B Kibele et al.•ARTICLE•KZfSS Kölner Zeitschrift für…•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 39

While regional mortality inequalities in Germany tend to be relatively stable in the short run, over the course of the past century marked changes have occurred in the country's regional mortality patterns. These changes include not only the re-emergence of stark differences between eastern and western Germany after 1970, which have almost disappeared again in the decades after the reunification of Germany in 1990; but also substantial changes in…

  • Widening socioeconomic differences in mortality among men aged 65 years and older in Germany

    Eva Kibele, Eva U B Kibele et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2013•Cited by: 8•References: 16

BACKGROUND: Although socioeconomic mortality differences in Germany are well documented, trends in group-specific mortality and differences between the eastern and the western parts of the country remain unexplored. METHODS: Population and death counts by level of lifetime earnings (1995-1996 to 2007-2008) and broad occupational groups (1995-1996 to 2003-2004) for men aged 65 years and older were obtained from the German Federal Pension Fund. Dir…
