Flexible Work Policies and the Division of Housework and Childcare in German Cohabiting Couples
Flexible working arrangements have become increasingly common and are considered a means to better reconcile paid and unpaid work. Therefore, the use of such measures can determine how couples divide their household and childcare tasks. While currently these tasks are dominantly female connotated, an increase in flexible work arrangements may contribute to a more gender-egalitarian distribution of unpaid work. However, empirical evidence on this …
Perceived Social Exclusion and Loneliness
Perceived social exclusion refers to the subjective feeling of not being part of the macrolevel society. Loneliness arises if existing social relationships at the micro level are either quantitatively or qualitatively perceived as deficient. Here, we conceptualize and empirically demonstrate that both experiences are distinct but related constructs and investigate how they interact over time. The data set consists of 6,002 community-dwelling adul…
Changes in Secondary Healthcare Use Over Retirement Transition
We conclude that secondary healthcare use in Sweden does not generally change with retirement. However, over the course of retirement gender differences in secondary healthcare use tend to decrease and within-gender educational differences tend to increase. We interpret the results as reflecting the role of labour market institutions in contributing to gender differences but repressing educational differences in secondary healthcare use
Does Retirement Change What Makes Us Satisfied With Life? An Examination of Response Shift With a Matched Control Group Design
Research has shown that life satisfaction depends on a person’s resources and that retirement is associated with resource gains and losses. We examine if these resources contribute equally to life satisfaction before and after the retirement transition. Coming from the psychological concept of response shifts, we conceptualize an adjustment process to major life changes in which also the association between different resources and life satisfacti…
Heterogeneity in Trajectories of Life Satisfaction After Reunification
For people living in the former East Germany, reunification with the former West Germany fundamentally transformed the sociopolitical system and most domains of everyday life. Previous research has revealed temporal shifts in average life satisfaction after reunification in the former East German population as a whole, but so far little is known about heterogeneity in patterns of adjustment within the population. Building on evidence of considera…
Grandparents' Relationship to Grandchildren in the Transition to Adulthood
This study investigates grandparent-grandchild relations in emerging adulthood, focusing on grandchildren's transition to residential independence and the role of parents as mediators. Using three waves of the German Ageing Survey (DEAS), we estimate fixed effects models to assess changes in the frequency of contact and emotional closeness of 349 grandparents with 494 grandchildren aged 16 to 30 years. Grandparent-grandchild contact decreases dur…
Relationship-Based Selective Participation of Secondary Respondents in a German Multi-Actor Panel Study

Following the leverage-salience …
Pathways to retirement
We examine the association between pathways to retirement and patterns of subjective well-being in Germany. We argue that short-term development of subjective well-being is related to social status changes while long-term development of subjective well-being is related to resources and changes in life circumstances. Importantly, we expect that how a person's social status changes and his/her access to resources post-retirement both depend on the …
