National symbolic capital in a multinational environment. An exploratory study of symbolic boundaries at a European school in Brussels
Despite processes of Europeanisation in education aimed at reducing symbolic boundaries of nationality among Europeans, countries continue to be judged in terms of their reputation or “symbolic capital”. Based on qualitative group interviews with students at a European School in Brussels, a unique institution educating the future citizens of Europe, we investigate to what extent the symbolic capital attributed to the students’ national background…
Social Class and Transnational Human Capital: How Middle and Upper Class Parents Prepare Their Children for Globalization
Due to globalization processes, foreign language skills, knowledge about other countries and intercultural competences have increasingly become important for societies and people's social positions. Previous research on social inequality, however, has dominantly focused on the reproduction of class structures within the boundaries of a particular nation-state without considering the importance of these specific skills and competences. Within Soci…

Educating Children in Times of Globalisation: Class-specific Child-rearing Practices and the Acquisition of Transnational Cultural Capital
Owing to globalisation processes, foreign language skills and familiarity with foreign cultures and institutions, along with similar skills and dispositions which we call 'transnational cultural capital', have gained in importance, affecting the positional competition between classes. Drawing on Bourdieu and based on semi-structured interviews with parents of adolescents, some of whom spent a school year abroad, we reconstruct class-specific diff…

Explaining Citizens’ Participation in a Transnational European Public Sphere
Globalization and Europeanization processes have led to an increasing public sphere deficit. This deficit can be addressed by a transnationalization of the individual countries’ national public spheres. This requires a perception of discussions in other national public spheres, a condition which is met if citizens of a nation-state follow reporting of issues in other countries. Using Eurobarometer surveys, we examine the extent to which citizens …

Transnational Human Capital, Education, and Social Inequality. Analyses of International Student Exchange
Due to globalization, skills such as foreign language proficiency and intercultural competence, here referred to as transnational human capital, are becoming increasingly important. A study-abroad program during schooling is one of the most efficient ways to acquire transnational human capital. Until now, class-specific access to transnational capital has remained largely unexplored. With recourse to the literature on the sociology of education a…
Social Class and Cultural Consumption: The Impact of Modernisation in a Comparative European Perspective
Pierre Bourdieu’s work has argued that there is a homology of social classes on the one hand and cultural consumption on the other. In contrast, theories of individualisation posit that social class plays only a minor role in shaping lifestyle in contemporary societies. In this paper we examine a) how much contemporary highbrow lifestyles in 27 European countries are structured by class membership, b) the extent to which highbrow consumption vari…
Why not Turkey? Attitudes towards Turkish Membership in the EU among Citizens in 27 European Countries: Why Not Turkey
Turkey has made significant efforts to fulfil requested accession criteria through socio-economic and cultural convergence with EU Member States. However, Turkey's eventual membership in the EU depends on the support of current EU citizens. This article therefore analyses citizens' attitudes towards Turkish accession in the 27 EU Member States. The analysis shows that a clear majority of citizens reject the idea of Turkey joining the EU. Four fac…

From Hasan to Herbert: Name-Giving Patterns of Immigrant Parents between Acculturation and Ethnic Maintenance
Names often indicate belonging to a certain ethnic group. When immigrant parents choose a first name for their child that is common in their host society, they show a high degree of acculturation. In contrast, selecting a name common only in the parents' country of origin indicates ethnic maintenance. Using data from the German Socio-economic Panel for Turkish, Southwest European, and former Yugoslav immigrants, the authors show that acculturatio…
