This paper aims to examine the history of the South Korean independent documentary movement since its formation in the 1980s. Questioning why social documentaries arose in the mid 1980s, this study traces the origin of independent documentary back to Gwangju Video, the compilations of the video footage that contain the scenes of the 1980 Gwangju Uprising.
