  • Staff, Stewards, and Strikes

E Paul Durrenberger, Suzan Erem•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2005•Cited by: 3

Union staffers think that the willingness and ability of the workers they represent to strike is the key to getting better contracts. Worksite leaders, however, think the key is the speaking and legal skill of the union representatives who bargain for them. This difference is rooted in their everyday experiences, but it leads to a communication gap of which neither is aware. Thus, stewards are likely to see a call for a strike authorization vote …

  • Checking for Relationships across Domains Measured by Triads and Paired Comparisons

    Open Access•E Paul Durrenberger, Suzan Erem•ARTICLE•CAM•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 12

The authors discuss an extension of the use of the triads test for judged similarity among various roles to measure union consciousness and paired comparisons techniques to assess the relative importance of structural versus personal characteristics for negotiating good contracts, the nature of obligations between stewards and staff, and tasks that stewards find most important to them. The authors show how they moved from the mapping of cognitive…

  • Labor Pains

    Bruce Nissen, Suzan Erem•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•2002

Labor Pains is an insider's account of the struggle to rebuild a vibrant and powerful trade union movement in the United States. It takes as its starting point the daily experience of a union organizer, and brings that experience to life. It enables us to grasp how the conflicting demands of race, class, and gender are lived in the new union movement. The role of the unions is defined mainly by larger economic and political agendas. While keeping…

  • When Anthropology Fails

    Open Access•Suzan Erem, E Paul Durrenberger•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Humanism•2000

This is the story of he prices people pay for knowledge and what happens when they are too high. It is the story of some of the gratifications and frustrations of a collaborative project that relied equally on inside and outside views and called heavily on each of us

  • The Abstract, the Concrete, the Political, and the Academic

    E Durrenberger, E Paul Durrenberger et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1999

We describe the political structure and dynamics of a labor union local in Chicago and how both interact with the goals and objectives of the members, stewards, union representatives, officers of the union local, and the international. We discuss how the political structure and process were revealed, not because we focused on it but in the process of sabotage that occurred when we attempted a different kind of study

  • The Weak Suffer What They Must

    Open Access•E Paul Durrenberger, Suzan Erem•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1999•Cited by: 10•References: 26

Because of a change at a hospital, we are able to contrast two different structures of leadership in a union worksite. Since we had tested a cognitive construct we call "union consciousness" before the change, the difference in structure provides a natural experiment to determine the consequences of structural change for cognition. We repeated the test after the change and found a different cognitive structure. We conclude that cognitive structur…

  • The Way I See It

    Open Access•Suzan Erem, E Paul Durrenberger•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Humanism•1997

We have woven union representative Suzan Erem's personal essay on the passions and pitfalls of her chosen vocation with italicized statements that Paul Durrenberger recorded from workers at meetings and during interviews with stewards, reps, and union officers to depict some points of view about the labor movement in the United States today that are not articulated by unions, their opponents, or the press. These sometimes contradictory inside vie…

  • Getting a Raise

E Paul Durrenberger, Suzan Erem•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•1997•Cited by: 7

We develop a practice perspective that integrates thought, context, and action to understand the work of a union representative as she tries to change, rather than reproduce, conditions for workers in an industrializing and downsizing hospital. By alternating our narratives, Suzan Erem, the union representative in the story, speaks for herself to present an inside view of motives, responses, and reactions, while Paul Durrenberger, an anthropologi…

  • The Dance of Power

    Open Access•E Paul Durrenberger, Suzan Erem•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1997•Cited by: 7•References: 30

The authors illustrate the roles of agency and structure as workers, management, and a union representative use ritual encounters for their own ends in an American hospital. They also discuss the symbolism of the union contract as a charter for ritual and indicate how it and the structure that defines it subvert the broader goals of the union
