Cultural‐Policy Framework and Mothers' Earnings Penalty
This article explores the diversity of cultural and policy contexts in Western European countries and examines their role in explaining the persistent and heterogeneous motherhood penalty. Using harmonized European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU‐SILC) data from 13 countries, the analysis spans 2006 to 2022 and provides average and distributional results. The findings reveal a motherhood penalty in 10 countries, with the high…
Informality, self‐employment and heterogeneous managerial ability
The view of informal employment as a last resort in the labour market has recently been challenged by numerous studies documenting the existence of a high degree of heterogeneity within the formal and informal sectors. In particular, informal self‐employment/employment may be voluntary or forced. There is currently not much theoretical support for these observations. We develop a theoretical model of the labour market with both formal and informa…
The role of non‐base compensation in explaining the motherhood wage gap
This paper underlines the importance of accounting for non‐base compensation in explaining the motherhood wage gap. We consider two alternative measures of hourly wage using Italian EU‐SILC data from 2007 to 2019: the base‐wage and the full‐wage . The former refers to the contractual base wage, while the latter includes performance‐based bonuses, productivity bonuses, commissions, pay incentives, and other extra payments. We address the endogenei…

Impact of Internal Migration on Labor Market Outcomes of Native Males in Thailand
We investigate the impact of internal migration on local labor markets in Thailand. Using an instrumental variables approach based on weather and distance, we construct an exogenous measure of the net migration inflow into each region. Our econometric results show that instrumenting for the possible endogeneity of net inward migration is crucial to the analysis. The results suggest substantial adjustments in hours worked and weekly wages in respo…
Is There an Informal Employment Wage Penalty? Evidence from South Africa
We estimate the wage penalty associated with working in the South African informal sector. To this end we use a rich data set on non‐self‐employed males that allows one to accurately distinguish workers employed in the informal sector from those employed in the formal sector and link individuals over time. Implementing various econometric approaches we find that there is a gross wage penalty of a little over 18% for working in the informal sector…
