IEEE Educational Activities Board Awards
The 2017 IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB), chaired by IEEE Educational Activities Vice President S. K. Ramesh, upon the recommendation of the EAB Awards and Recognition Committee (ARC) has named the recipients of the 2017 IEEE EAB Awards. EAB Awards recognize and honor individuals and companies for major contributions to engineering and technical education. Awards are given for meritorious activities in accreditation, continuing education,…
Ece as a pre-professional undergraduate program
Rapid changes and broadening scope in electrical and computer engineering (ECE) combine with other pressures to make BS degree-level preparation for the future increasingly difficult. The proposed solution is a pre-professional degree, focusing on broad educational outcomes and featuring nontraditional learning experiences, leading to a variety of graduate school career tracks. It is argued that this approach is potentially a productive way in wh…
A new introductory electrical engineering curriculum for the first-year student
This paper reports on the author's experience with respect to a major revision of the introductory Electrical Engineering curriculum at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The new curriculum incorporates classroom and laboratory experience in electrical engineering for first-year students. The new courses are based on the "spiral" approach to education in which concepts are introduced at an applications-oriented level, and then repeatedly revisited …
Summary of innovations in electrical engineering curricula
Two aspects of innovation in electrical engineering education are summarized: the membership and goals of the NSF Engineering Education Coalitions, and innovations implemented at individual schools. The latter summary results from responses to a survey of electrical engineering department heads. Responses from 35 schools were received; they are organized in this report under the categories of major program/curriculum revisions, curricular revisio…
An Experiment in the Teaching of Principles of Economics Using Personal Computers
The Role of Project Work in the EE Curriculum
The relation of the undergraduate project program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute to some common problems of curriculum development is described. In particular, the ways in which project work addresses the difficulties of teaching design, the provision of helpful laboratory experience, and the introduction of new technical knowledge, are discussed. Further, it is argued that the process of engineering, as exemplified in a well-thought-out and …
