Durational variability of schwa in early and late Spanish–English bilinguals
Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether bilinguals categorically displayed shorter or longer schwa durations between fixed word pairs where one word contains a deletable syllable and the other does not (as in “rational” [ræʃənəl] → [ræʃnəl] compared with “rationality” [ræʃənæləti]). We hypothesized that monolingual and early bilingual speakers would produce shorter values for “deletable” schwas whereas late bilinguals would not. M…

Phonological Selectivity in the First Fifty Words of a Bilingual Child
This paper examines the phonology of the first 50-word period of a Portuguese-Turkish bilingual child (1;7–1;10), with specific reference to selection/avoidance patterns. Results reveal clear patterns of avoidance related to language-independent segmental restrictions (front rounded vowels, back high unrounded vowel, initial fricatives, laterals and consonant clusters), and in some cases, to word/syllable shapes. Results also show lack of synonym…

Some pilot experiments on Turkish vowel harmony
Vowel harmony in Turkish has been discussed quite extensively in the literature. The commonly agreed view is the one which suggests the separation of root harmony from suffix harmony because the latter is productive while the former is not. This paper is an attempt to evaluate the above view. Three phonological experiments are conducted to test the native speakers’ judgment on the productivity of vowel harmony in suffixes and different types of r…
