  • Parametric Relationships in English CVNC and CVC Monosyllables

    Open Access•E Wyn Roberts, William R Babcock•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1975

Six arbitrarily chosen hypotheses derived from impressionistic phonetic examinations of English monosyllabic CVNC and CVC utterances were tested instrumentally, using a Frøkjar-Jensen Aerometer. Validation by correlation was found to a considerable degree for all of them and expected peculiarities in the data suggest that other parameters such as vowel quality must be considered in further experimentation

  • A Spectrographic Investigation of the Structural Status of Ueberlaenge in German Vowels

    Open Access•Arthur M Hanhardt, Dean H Obrecht et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1965

An investigation was carried out concerning an alleged contrast in spoken German, between long and overlong vowels. Minimally biasing frames were created and exposed to a number of native speakers, eliciting members of various pairs in context. Detailed acoustical measurements were made and analysed. Comparison of results indicates that the presence of a long/overlong contrast as a valid signal element is extremely doubtful. Numerous reversals oc…

  • Some Further Experiments in The Perception of Resonant Consonants

    Open Access•Dean H Obrecht, William R Babcock•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1964•References: 3

A series of forty-eight stimulus patterns were painted and converted to sound by the pattern playback. Variations were made in F2 transition frequencies, in the frequency of F1 resonances, and in the presence or absence of resonances in the F2 and F3 regions. The test was administered for identification as /m, n, ñ, ŋ, or 1/. Subjects were only partially naive in some cases. Results indicate that the principal discrimination cues are definitely t…
