  • Predictability and perception for native and non-native listeners

    Melissa M Baese‐berk, Melissa Baese-Berk et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2018

Phonological knowledge is influenced by a variety of cues that reflect predictability (e.g. semantic predictability). Listeners utilize various aspects of predictability when determining what they have heard. In the present paper, we ask how aspects of the acoustic phonetic signal (e.g. speaking rate) interact with other knowledge reflecting predictability (e.g. lexical frequency and collocation strength) to influence how speech is perceived. Spe…

  • Acoustic Correlates of Stress in English Adjective–Noun Compounds

    Open Access•Tuuli Morrill•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2012•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 26

This study investigates the phonetic implementation of stress in American English compounds by measuring the interaction of stress cues with different intonation patterns. Participants in an experiment produced compounds and phrases such as greenhouse and green house in different prosodic positions and sentence types to elicit the contrast in a variety of intonational environments. Intonation patterns were labeled and carefully controlled for, an…
