  • Acoustical Characteristics of Sentential Focus: Narrow vs. Broad and Single vs. Dual Focus Environments

    Open Access•Stephen J Eady, William E Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1986•Cited by: 25•References: 8

Acoustical analyses of speech production were conducted to determine the effects of two types of sentence focus distinction on intonational attributes of fundamental voice frequency ( F o ) and duration. In each of two experiments, analyses were performed on seven speakers who orally read sentences containing variations in focus prompted by preceding questions. In Experiment 1, speakers produced higher F o peaks and longer word durations for word…

  • Acoustical aspects of contrastive stress in question–answer contexts

William E Cooper, Stephen J Eady et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of the Acoustical…•1985

A series of experiments was conducted to examine the influence of contrastive stress on intonational patterns of duration and fundamental voice frequency (F0). In a preliminary study, intonational patterns in spontaneous speech were compared with the patterns in oral reading of the transcribed spontaneous material. In both circumstances, a general declination of F0 peaks throughout the course of a sentence was not regularly observed, contrary to …

  • Differences in the F0 Patterns of Speech: Tone Language Versus Stress Language

    Open Access•Stephen J Eady•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1982•Cited by: 7•References: 8

A comparison was made between the fundamental frequency (F 0 ) patterns of continuous speech in Mandarin Chinese and American English. Seven adult male native speakers of each language were asked to read an unemotional narrative text written in their language. The analysis showed the F o patterns of Chinese to have a greater amount of dynamic movement than those of English. The speech of the Mandarin subjects displayed a greater average rate of F…
