  • An exploratory study on self‐evaluated aggression and androgens in women

Open Access•Bettina von der Pahlen, Ralf Lindman et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 32

Healthy, premenopausal women completed the Buss‐Perry Aggression Questionnaire. Venous blood samples were taken at the mid‐cycle phase of the menstrual cycle to determine plasma androgen levels. Total and free testosterone, 5α‐dihydrotestosterone, androstenedione, and dehydroepiandrosterone were assessed. Path analyses were aimed at finding out which of the five circulating hormones might best predict a latent aggression construct derived from th…

  • Testosterone, aggressiveness, and antisocial personality

    Open Access•Anu S Aromäki, Ralf Lindman et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1999

Testosterone levels were examined in prisoners convicted of violent crimes (n = 13), in men previously convicted of violent crimes but currently not in prison (n = 15), in nonviolent alcoholics (n = 15), and in randomly selected control males (n = 16). Morning, afternoon, and evening testosterone levels were assessed after a minimum alcohol abstinence period of 24 hr. Violent and nonviolent men did not differ in plasma total testosterone level on…

  • Early antecedents of spouse abuse

Open Access•Bettina von der Pahlen, Björn Öst et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1997•References: 13

Males taken into police custody for reported spouse abuse (n = 19) and a matched control group (n = 19) were asked to describe the drinking habits of their parents and the extent of intra-family violence witnessed by them as children. The retrospective data were compared to the participant's own present alcohol use and aggressiveness (CTS). Excessive paternal drinking and intra-family violence were recalled significantly more often by the spouse …

  • Serum testosterone, cortisol, glucose, and ethanol in males arrested for spouse abuse

Open Access•Ralf Lindman, Bettina von der Pahlen et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1992•References: 15

Concentrations of ethanol, testosterone, cortisol, and glucose were determined in serum obtained from 16 males taken into police custody after incidents of spouse abuse. The mean blood ethanol level at the time of arrest was 33.3 ± 2.6 mM. Serum testosterone levels were significantly lower and cortisol levels higher at the time of police intervention (within 1 hour of the incident) compared to control data collected later from the subjects when s…

  • Verbal interactions of aggressively and nonaggressively predisposed males in a drinking situation

    Open Access•Ralf Lindman, Pertti Järvinen et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1987•References: 28

The effects of progressive intoxication were studied in male social drinkers classified from prior histories as either aggressively (A) or nonaggressively (NA) predisposed while intoxicated. Two groups of two A and two NA subjects engaged in videotaped group discussions that were analyzed by Bales interaction process analysis (IPA). At comparable levels of ad libitum alcohol intake in a natural drinking environment, significantly more verbal acti…

  • Self-Ratings and Linguistic Proficiency in Bilingual Subjects

    Open Access•Ralf Lindman•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1977•Cited by: 1•References: 5

A representative sample of 100 Ss were drawn from a bilingual community in Finland. They were matched on self-rated proficiency in Swedish and Finnish and tested on six variables of linguistic proficiency in each language by parallel tests. Factor analysis revealed two factors for each language: one performance factor and one self-rating factor. The conclusion is drawn that the subjective impression of linguistic proficiency was equally little di…

  • Preferences of Phonetic Stimuli

    Open Access•Nils Erik Enkvist, Ralf Lindman•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1965•References: 2

Eight types of recorded phonetic stimuli were presented to Finnish-speaking and Swedish-speaking students of Finnish universities. Four of these stimulus types consisted of wholly artificial, partly controlled and partly randomized sequences of Finland-Swedish speech sounds; two were more similar to Finnish and two to Swedish, having been obtained by scrambling either the vowels or the consonants of samples of Finnish and Swedish texts, respectiv…
