  • Redundant Reference as an Interactional Resource: Social Situation and Recipient Familiarity in Referential Choice

Open Access•Xiaoxiao Lu, Sibei Ye et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2026

In interpersonal communication, speakers often provide more information than is minimally necessary for referent identification, thereby producing redundant reference. Although such expressions have often been treated as cooperative, less is known about whether, and how, they are systematically shaped by social-interactional considerations. The present research addressed this question through three language-production experiments examining the jo…

  • Narrative perspective and immersion in literary reading: Experimental evidence from behavioural and neural measures

Open Access•Letian Li, Meijia Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Poetics•2026

This study examines how narrative perspective shapes readers’ experience of literary texts. Although immersion has often been treated as a central dimension of literary experience, it remains unclear how different narrative perspectives influence readers’ cognitive and subjective involvement during reading. To address this question, we conducted two complementary experiments that examined perspective effects at different levels of processing. Exp…

  • The influences of narrative perspective shift and scene detail on narrative semantic processing

    Open Access•Jian Jin, Siyun Liu•ARTICLE•Language and Cognition•2024

The embodied view of semantic processing holds that readers achieve reading comprehension through mental simulation of the objects and events described in the narrative. However, it remains unclear whether and how the encoding of linguistic factors in narrative descriptions impacts narrative semantic processing. This study aims to explore this issue under the narrative context with and without perspective shift, which is an important and common l…

  • A Corpus Study on the Difference of Turn-Taking in Online Audio, Online Video, and Face-to-Face Conversation

Open Access•Ying Tian, Tian Ying et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2024•References: 71

Daily conversation is usually face-to-face and characterized by rapid and fluent exchange of turns between interlocutors. With the need to communicate across long distances, advances in communication media, online audio communication, and online video communication have become convenient alternatives for an increasing number of people. However, the fluency of turn-taking may be influenced when people communicate using these different modes. In th…

  • An Analysis of the Linguistic Features of Popular Chinese Online Fantasy Novels

    Jian Jin, Siyun Liu•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•2022•References: 68

Previous studies found that linguistic features can be used to predict the success of novels. However, which specific linguistic features better contribute to a novel’s popularity is unclear. This study addressed this issue by investigating the linguistic features of 2,008 online Chinese fantasy novels with different popularity (indicated by the Baidu Index). Specifically, word part-of-speech, personal pronouns, word complexity, and local/overall…

  • Selfish power and unselfish status in Chinese work situations

Open Access•Jian Jin, Ye Li et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Journal Of Social Psychology•2021

The present research explored the selfishness of power and status as well as the mechanism in Chinese work situations. By using experimental and survey methods, two studies were designed to investigate the relationships among power, status, and self‐interested behaviour (SIB) as well as the mediating effect of perspective‐taking (PT). Results of the two studies consistently indicated that power increases whereas status reduces SIB. These opposing…

  • Assessment of the Chinese Resident Health Literacy Scale in a population-based sample in South China

Open Access•Minxue Shen, Ming Hu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

The 2012 national health literacy scale was validated, and 64 items were selected based on classical test theory and item response theory. The revised version of the scale has strong psychometric properties with minor measurement invariance

Xuan Li, Siyun Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2013

  • Processing Lexical Tones and Emotional Tones in Precategorical Acoustic Storage: Processing Lexical Tones and Emotional Tones in Precategorical Acoustic Storage

Wei-Wei QIN, Siyun Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2010

  • Perception of Mandarin Lexical Tones when F0 Information is Neutralized

    Open Access•Siyun Liu, A G Samuel•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2004•Cited by: 20•References: 33

In tone languages, the identity of a word depends on its tone pattern as well as its phonetic structure. The primary cue to tone identity is the fundamental frequency (F0) contour. Two experiments explore how listeners perceive Mandarin monosyllables in which all or part of the F0 information has been neutralized. In Experiment 1, supposedly critical portions of the tonal pattern were neutralized with signal processing techniques, yet identificat…
