  • Content-Form Interaction in the Acquisition of Temporal Markers by Mandarin-Speaking Children

    Open Access•Tempo Po-Yi Tang, Y Y Hsu et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2024

Aspect markers (AMs), temporal adverbs (TAs) and temporal nouns (TNs) are used by young Mandarin-speaking children to express time. However, the factors that affect the relative acquisition trajectories of these categories remains unclear. Accordingly, this study adopts Weist’s time-concept model to examine the patterns of acquisition between and within the above three categories of temporal markers in the Mandarin system of time. Specifically, t…

  • Functional orthographic units in Chinese character reading

    Open Access•Shi Pui Donald Li, Sam-Po Law et al.•ARTICLE•Psychonomic Bulletin & Review•2021

  • The Dual-route Account of Writing-to-Dictation in Chinese

    Open Access•Dustin Kai-Yan Lau•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2021•References: 29

This is a short report of an experiment conducted to investigate the effects of phonology-to-orthography (P-O) consistency, lexical frequency, imageability, and the number of strokes on writing-to-dictation in Chinese. Thirty-two undergraduates were tested using a writing-to-dictation task consisting of 60 Chinese characters without homophones (i.e., P-O consistent) and 60 Chinese characters with at least two homophones (i.e., P-O inconsistent), …

  • The Development of Morphemic Processing in Reading Chinese Compound Words

Dustin Kai-Yan Lau, Man‐Tak Leung et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2011

The current study investigated the development of morphemic processing in reading Chinese compound words. A total of 14 grade 2 children and 17 grade 6 children were recruited. A word-naming task and a character- naming task were conducted. Significant boundedness effects were observed in both word and character-naming tasks in grade 2. In contrast, significant boundedness effect was only found in character naming but not in word naming in grade …

  • Feedback Consistency Effect on Writing-to-Dictation Task in Chinese

Man-Tak Leung, Hoi-Ming Lui et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2011

The influence of feed-forward consistency (FFC) (i.e., the consistency of mapping from the orthographic form to the pronunciation of the whole \ncharacter) on character recognition and reading aloud tasks have been well documented in a sizable literature in which subjects performed better on feed-forward consistent characters than inconsistent characters. Analogous to the FFC effect in reading aloud, the feedback consistency (FBC) effect (“consis…

  • Development of sub-character processing and the use of orthographical and phonological memories in learning new Chinese characters in primary school-aged normal readers

Dustin Kai-Yan Lau, Man‐Tak Leung et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2004

Normal Hong Kong schoolchildren readers from grades 1, 2 and 3 were involved in this experiment to find out at which grade the sub-character processing is employed to memorize newly learned Chinese characters. Subjects were required to work on a delayed-recall task with pseudo-characters constructed using different radical frequencies controlled across grades. Prior to the recall, verbal and visual intervening tasks were inserted to determine the…
