  • Cross-language activation of figurative meanings of translated L1 idioms in L2 reading: An eye-tracking study

Open Access•Irina Elgort, Lingli Du et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2026

Cross-language figurative meaning activation in idiom processing has been observed in primed lexical and semantic decision tasks, but not in text reading. To study first-language figurative idiom meaning activation in second-language reading, we created and tested a novel contextual idiom-priming paradigm and conducted an eye-tracking experiment with Chinese–English immersion and non-immersion bilinguals, and English-speaking controls. Three coun…

  • The role of prosody in facilitating memory for discourse information in Mandarin Chinese: Evidence from a delayed recall task

  • Multimodal language processing in school-aged Mandarin-speaking children: The role of beat gesture in enhancing memory for discourse information

    Mengzhu Yan, Tianqi Xiong•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2025

Communication is typically multimodal, meaning that communication involves the utilization of various cues from different modalities. While spoken words in the auditory modality primarily convey semantic information, gestures from the visual modality complement and enhance the communication process. However, the role of visual cues, specifically beat gestures, a type of non-verbal co-speech gesture used to emphasize certain information, in langua…

  • Prosody in linguistic journals: A bibliometric analysis

Open Access•Mengzhu Yan, Xue Wu•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2024

The present study provides a systematic review of prosody research in linguistic journals through a bibliometric analysis. Using the bibliographic data from 2001 to 2021 in key linguistic journals that publish prosody-related research, this study adopted co-citation analysis and keyword analysis to investigate the state of the intellectual structure and the emerging trends of research on prosody in linguistics over the past 21 years. Additionally…

  • A Study on “Nāmarūpapratyayaḥ Sparśaḥ” in the Pratītyasamutpāda Chapter of the Dharmaskandha

    Open Access•Mengzhu Yan•ARTICLE•印度學佛教學研究•2023

It is commonly considered that nāmarūpapratyayaṃ ṣaḍāyatanaṃ 名色縁六処 and ṣaḍāyatanapratyayaḥ sparśaḥ 六処縁触 exist in the twelve chain pratītya-samutpāda-aṅga. However, a special viewpoint termed nāmarūpapratyayaḥ sparśaḥ 名色縁触 links the two in the Pratītyasamutpāda chapter of the Dharmaskandha. Based on the Sanskrit manuscript and Xuanzang’s translation, this paper examines the concepts contained in the term of nāmarūpapratyayaḥ sparśaḥ from the follow…

  • The Role of Prominence in Activating Focused Words and Their Alternatives in Mandarin: Evidence from Lexical Priming and Recognition Memory

    Open Access•Mengzhu Yan, Sasha Calhoun et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 50

When a sentence is produced with contrastive prosodic prominence, the word that carries the prominence becomes more salient, and alternatives to that word are usually implied. In processing, this implies that focused words and their alternatives should be more strongly activated. Previous research on focus processing has primarily been confined to Germanic languages. The current paper reports on two experiments investigating the role of prosodic …

  • Focus Effects on Immediate and Delayed Recognition of Referents in Samoan

    Open Access•Sasha Calhoun, Mengzhu Yan et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 58

This paper looks at the effect of focus-marking on the immediate and delayed recognition of referents in Samoan. Focus-marking on a word can imply the presence of alternatives to that word which are relevant to the interpretation of the utterance. Consistent with this, psycholinguistic evidence is growing that alternatives to focus-marked words are selectively activated in the immediate processing of an utterance and longer term memory. However, …
