“How is Li (It) expensive?” The participatory entextualization of internet memes and metapragmatic comments on Chinese social media
Language, dictionaries and society: The (re)presentation of LGBTQ individuals in Oxford online English dictionaries
Drawing on the framework of Critical Lexicographical Discourse Studies, this research examines how LGBTQ individuals are (re)presented in the Oxford online English dictionaries (OOEDs) through an analysis of LGBTQ slang terms and their accompanying examples within the dictionaries. The findings reveal that while OOEDs strive for descriptiveness by including a substantial number of LGBTQ slang terms, they also impose prescriptive constraints on us…
The interpersonal semantics of rhetoric: Ideological variations and their rhetorical construction in the GM debate in China
Different from previous linguistic studies on rhetoric, which primarily concern the ideational semantics and the logic of sentences, this article attempts to deal systematically with the interpersonal semantics of rhetoric by drawing on the comprehensive appraisal framework of systemic functional linguistics ( Martin and White 2005 ) and explores the mechanism of rhetorical persuasion in science communication via appraisal through a case study of…
Anthropocentrism in Contemporary Chinese Dictionary: A Synergic Perspective of Critical Lexicographical Discourse Studies and Systemic Functional Linguistics
Critical Lexicographical Discourse Studies (CLDS) view the dictionary as a discourse and emphasize an ideological, ethico-political dimension to the lexicographical process. Combining CLDS with Systemic Functional Linguistics, this paper looks into how anthropocentrism is manifested linguistically in Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (Seventh Edition), the most influential authoritative general-purpose Chinese dictionary, by examining the transitiv…
The erasure of nature in the discourse of oil production: An enhanced eco-discourse analysis, Part 1
This two-part article suggests ways in which elements of antagonistic discourses of the environment might be combined in a hybrid, innovative discourse that appeals to a broad section of the public while advocating for more environmentally sustainable practices in industry. It proposes an enhanced Positive Discourse Analysis (PDA) that not only identifies points of fissure in the hegemonic discourse but also seeks points of convergence that can b…
Drilling for fissures and exploiting common ground in the discourse of oil production: An enhanced eco-discourse analysis, Part 2
This is the second part of a two-part article which proposes an enhanced approach to eco-discourses after weighing the (dis)advantages of mainstream Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Positive Discourse Analysis (PDA). Part I ( Chen et al. 2021 ) explored the theoretical grounding for an enhanced PDA, introduced the research method and then, based on the adapted analytic framework of Stibbe (2016) , undertook a critical analysis of the discour…
Towards a systemic functional model for characterizing Chinese loanwords in English: The case of kowtow
Towards a Discourse Approach to Critical Lexicography
Ideology and power, the vital concerns of critical lexicography, are aspects of a dictionary that a lexicographer and a discerning dictionary user have to encounter in any serious lexicographical enterprise (Kachru 1995); however, critical lexicography as a theme did not receive much attention until Kachru and Kahane (1995). This term later appeared in Hornscheidt (2011) and Moon (2014). However, to date there has not been any systematic theoreti…
Research methods in language policy and planning: A practical guide
Though language planning and policy (LPP) research has been theoretically and conceptually robust since its emergence in the 1960s, neither empirical data collection (Johnson 2013) nor research met
Identity and Affiliation: Exploring Chinese Lexicographers’ Communal Identification in the 1970s
This paper explores how discursive and language resources were appropriated by bilingual lexicographers to establish solidarity with the powerful linguistic community and to create affiliation with members of their community. Informed by critical discourse studies and systemic functional linguistics, it showcases how Chinese lexicographers in the 1970s, constrained by the social context of the Cultural Revolution, accommodated to the revolutionar…
Lexicography, discourse and power: Uncovering ideology in the bilingualization of a monolingual English dictionary in China
This paper conceptualizes dictionary bilingualization as a recontextualizing practice and explores how ideology and power play out in the recontextualization of lexicographic discourse across languages and cultures to result in the transformation of meaning. It first proposes viewing the (bilingualized) dictionary as discourse and emphasizes bilingual lexicography as a site of an asymmetrical linguistic and cultural power dynamics. The paper then…
Chinese Discourse Studies
China’s breathtaking development and change has engendered various responses and interpretations. However, most scholarly interpretations are ‘Westcentric’ (p. 5). The role of cultural discourse an
The Discoursal Construction of the Lexicographer’s Identity in a Learner’s Dictionary: A Systemic Functional Perspective
While purporting to be descriptive, modern corpus-based dictionaries are covertly prescriptive (see Moon 1989). This ‘descriptive prescriptivism’ (Balteiro 2011) produces a hybrid identity for contemporary lexicographers. This study applies a systemic functional linguistics (SFL) framework to investigate the construction of the lexicographer’s identity through an analysis of the usage notes in the Longman Dictionary of English Language and Cultur…
Bilingual Lexicography as Recontextualization: A Case Study of Illustrative Examples in A New English–Chinese Dictionary
Different from previous research that tends to view bilingual dictionaries as objective and value-free representations of the languages and the world, this paper argues that bilingual lexicography is a complex site of ideological struggle. It conceptualizes bilingual lexicography as recontextualization from the perspective of critical discourse analysis and explores how the recontextualization of lexicographical discourse across cultures and cont…
