Austriacisms and Their Co-Variants—Short-Term Diachrony in the 21st Century
The focus of our contribution is on lexical Austriacisms, i.e., lexical features of the Austrian standard language. Whereas in previous studies, only a small set of Austriacisms has been examined, with food terms being particularly popular, this contribution considers 76 lexical variables with 205 variants (Austriacisms and their co-variants), which are examined through complex variationist corpus analyses. The data is provided by the Austrian Me…
Variation adnominaler Possessivkonstruktionen im Deutschen
This paper investigates horizontal as well as vertical variation of adnominal possessive constructions in rural areas in Austria. The analyses are based on a corpus consisting of (more) “free” and (more) “controlled” data. As expected, intra- as well as extralinguistic parameters control the choice of construction variants. Among other factors, the nominal realisation of the possessor, the situational context and the region turn out to be decisiv…
Ein Austriazismus auf Erfolgskurs – geben als Basisverb der ziel-orientierten Objektsbewegung
The article focuses on the German verb geben (lit. ‘to give’) functioning as a put verb, i. e. a basic verb of goal-oriented placement. While German has been classified as a put-less language in previous research, initial studies on the German language in Austria show that geben seems to be spreading increasingly as a basic put verb, starting from the language area of Vienna. The research desiderata of this thus far overlooked phenomenon include …
Variation and dynamics of “complementizer agreement” in German
To date, there has been limited empirical research on complementizer agreement (CA). We investigate CA drawing on a corpus of 144 speakers from 13 locations across Austria that was elicited through computer supported language production experiments and recorded in conversations. We investigate the linguistic factors that govern the occurrence of CA, as well as its areal distribution. We further explore the role of CA in speakers’ linguistic reper…
Tracing a standard language in Austria using methodological microvariations of Verbal and Matched Guise Technique
Based on the key hypothesis, that there are heterogeneous conceptualizations of “standardness” within the German speaking countries, this paper both methodologically and empirically tangles main aspects on “standard in Austria” from the perspective of perceptual variationist linguistics. Two series of comprehensive listener judgment tests based on 536 informants, considering different sociolinguistic parameters and assumptions on model speakers, …
Bairisch Und Alemannisch In Österreich
Competing norms of standard pronunciation. Phonetic analyses on the ‹-ig›-variation in Austria
This paper focuses on phonetic variation within the standard German language register of Austria. While the norm status and a high socio-symbolic value are attributed to certain lexical variants of standard language in Austria, the norm and usage status of characteristic phonetic properties remain unclear, due to lack of empirical analyses. By investigating the relation between standard language norms and “standard usage” ( Gebrauchsstandard ) in…

Variantenwörterbuch des Deutschen
The revised second edition of the German Dictionary of Regional Language Variants documents approx. 12,000 words/variants of standard German with limited or particular usage in one nation or region along with their customary German equivalents. It includes countries or regions where German is the official language as well as those with significant German minorities. New additions include German-speaking areas of Romania, Namibia, and Mexico.
Zur Dynamik bairischer Dialektsyntax – eine Pilotstudie
Thematically, this article can be placed in the domain of syntactic variation studies. The areal focus presented here is the contiguous Bavarian linguistic area in the southeast of Germany, Austria (excluding Vorarlberg), and northern Italy (South Tyrol). The empirical basis for this discussion was furnished by an extensive pilot study for which two generations of dialect speakers completed an indirect survey. In summary, the results provide evid…
Current trends in grammaticalization research
Die Erhebung syntaktischer Phänomene durch die indirekte Methode
This article demonstrates how syntactic phenomena can be successfully collected using the indirect method. The empirical basis for this discussion is supplied by data from the DFG-funded SyHD (Syntax of Hessian Dialects) project, in which, at a total of over 160 locations across - and a further twelve locations distributed elliptically around - the German state of Hesse, syntactic phenomena are being investigated using an indirect questionnaire. …
