Verb semantics in second language French
This study investigates the acquisition of verb semantics by L1 Arabic-L2 French learners. We examine the effect of proficiency and the L1 transfer on the interlanguage of beginning and advanced adult learners of L2 French. We used a context-based acceptability judgment task with correction to test transitivity, unergativity, pure unaccusativity and alternating unaccusativity using (un)-grammatical illustrative sentences that are similar or diffe…

Amazigh-Arabic Code-Switching in Radio Talk Shows
This study considers code-switching ( CS ) in the discourse of multilingual Amazigh speakers. The corpus consists of live Amazigh radio talk shows in Morocco (North Africa). The study examines the frequency and nature of CS between Amazigh (Tashelhit variety) and Arabic and identifies the conversational functions of CS . The analysis shows a substantial use of Arabic in Amazigh radio discourse; 72 % of the utterances attest to Arabic CS . The two…
D-linked and non-d-linked wh -questions in L2 French and L3 English
This study considers L2 French and L3 English ultimate attainment among L1 Moroccan Arabic adult learners. It contrasts the acquisition of two types of wh -questions: discourse-linked and non-discourse-linked questions in root and embedded forms. The results of two acceptability judgment tasks indicate that the advanced learners in L2 French and L3 English are nativelike on d-linked wh -questions but less accurate on non-discourse-linked interrog…
Genericity in third language English
This study investigates the acquisition of genericity in advanced third language (L3) English. The learners are first language (L1) Moroccan Arabic–second language (L2) French adults. They completed an acceptability judgment task testing the interpretation of five count nominal types in noun phrase (NP)-level and sentence-level genericity: definite, indefinite and bare singulars, definite and bare plurals. The study defines the generic or non-gen…
Genericity in L2 French and L3 English
This study investigates the acquisition of genericity in L2 French and L3 English. While some exponents become generic by assembling morphological, syntactic and discursive cues, definite singular nominals additionally require the well-established kind restriction. It is a pragmatic and language-specific constraint. The participants are L1 Arabic adults advanced in L2 French, L1 Arabic-L2 French adults advanced in L3 English, French controls and …
Constraints on the argument structure of dative verbs in advanced L3 English
This study investigates the acquisition of the argument structure of dative verbs in L3 English. The learners are L1 Moroccan Arabic–L2 French adults advanced in L3 English. The study considers whether the L3 learners in a formal foreign language instruction context can develop nativelike sensitivity to the semantic and morphological constraints on the distribution of double objects and prepositional phrases in dative constructions. The results o…

The categorization of the relative complementizer phrase in third-language English
Research questions: The study considers (1) the nature of multilingual transfer in the pre-intermediate stage of third-language (L3) English and (2) the upper limit of L3 ultimate attainment with respect to the acquisition of definite and indefinite restrictive relative clauses. Methodology: The methodology used was four-point scale acceptability judgment tasks testing (un)-grammatical relative sentences. Data and analysis: The accuracy scores of…
Restrictive Relatives in L3 English
This study examines the acquisition of the restrictive relative clause with respect to the distribution of gaps and resumptive pronouns in L3 English. The learners are L1 Arabic–L2 French adults. The study considers whether the L1 or the L2 or both constitutes the source of morphosyntactic transfer in the L3 initial stages. The predictions of three multilingual transfer models are tested: the Typological Primacy Model; the Cumulative Enhancement …
L2 and L3 ultimate attainment
This study considers the upper limit of ultimate attainment in the L2 French and L3 English of trilingual learners. The learners are native speakers of Moroccan Arabic who started learning L2 French at eight and L3 English at 16. They are advanced in both languages. Four constructions representing the verb movement and null subject parameter were tested using acceptability judgement and preference tasks. The results show that the advanced L3 lear…
Language acquisition as computational resetting
This study considers the acquisition of the verb movement parameter in L3 English by adult Arabic–French bilinguals. The focus is on the nature of the L3 initial state and the contribution of the syntactic (CHL) and post-syntactic (phonetic form) modules to the process of parameter resetting. The results of acceptability judgement tests and preference tests show that the initial state of L3 English is influenced exclusively by the final state of …
