  • Guochao Empowering International Dissemination of Chinese Ethnic Minority Heritage

Open Access•Yan Li, Yu Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2026

Chinese ethnic minority cultures are integral to the Chinese cultural system and play a significant role in shaping the nation’s image through international dissemination. Amid the profound integration of internationalization and digitalization, ethnic minority cultures draw on Guochao (national tide)—a distinctive contemporary Chinese dissemination paradigm—to merge traditional ethnic heritage with modern artistic forms, thereby enabling a struc…

  • Dual Variations of Globalization and Localization

    Open Access•Yan Li, Xinyue Yao•ARTICLE•Philosophies•2026

This article focuses on the origin of “Wenqi Theory”—a core domain of ancient Chinese literary theory—specifically Cao Pi’s proposition that “literature is governed by qi”. It situates this concept within the 21st-century context of cultural globalization to engage in dialogue with Western aesthetics, aiming to revitalize the theory through mutual learning between Chinese and Western civilizations and integrate it into the system of modern transf…

  • When the Perfect Meets the Progressive

Open Access•Zhichao Wang, Xinyue Yao•ARTICLE•Journal of English Linguistics•2025

This study explores the evolution of the present perfect progressive (PerfProg) in American English from the early nineteenth century to the twenty-first century. Drawing on data from the Corpus of Historical American English, this study examines the PerfProg in relation to the past progressive and the present perfect simple. The frequency of the PerfProg increased steadily until the mid-twentieth century; thereafter it stabilized in popular writ…

  • Les propositions subordonnées au nom en mandarin standard

    Zhichao Wang, Xinyue Yao•ARTICLE•La linguistique•2024

Adopting the functionalist approach of André Martinet, this article aims to describe noun-subordinate clauses in Standard Mandarin for which previous research poses definitional and analytical problems. We first clarify the definition of noun-subordinate clauses. Then, based on the functions assumed by the determined noun in the main proposition, we establish a syntactic typology of noun-subordinate clauses. We argue that their determinative func…

Improving citizen epidemic prevention information literacy is one of the most cost-efficient and important measures to improve people's epidemic prevention abilities to effectively deal with future public health crises. • Research on the Paths and Effectiveness of Governance Tools Based on the Evolution of Environmental Nimby Event

Open Access•Peng Xu, Xinyue Yao et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Identifying the path and effectiveness of governance tools is the key to environmental NIMBY (not in my back yard) event governance. However, there are limited studies on the path between effective governance tools and environmental NIMBY events. Based on the theory of emotional catharsis, we establish an analytical framework for the evolution of the environmental NIMBY event and analyze the effectiveness of the current main governance tools. The…

  • Colloquialisation and the evolution of Australian English

    P Collins, Xinyue Yao•ARTICLE•English World-Wide A Journal of…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 18

This paper investigates whether colloquialisation – a stylistic shift by which written genres come to be more similar to spoken genres – has played a role in the endonormativisation of the grammar of Australian English, a variety which has long been noted for its penchant for colloquialism. The study tracks changes in grammatical colloquialism from the early 20th century against the historical backdrop of the progressive decline in Britishness in…

  • The evolution of the “hot news” perfect in English

    Xinyue Yao•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Pragmatics•2016•References: 16

This paper deals with the “hot news” use of the English present perfect. Previous research has suggested that this use marks the end point of the perfect category, paving the way for further grammaticalisation to a perfective or past tense. To examine its historical development in Modern English, verb forms in the leads of hard news reports in the New York Times and the Sydney Morning Herald were examined, with comparison made between two time pe…

  • Cleft constructions in Hong Kong English

    Xinyue Yao•ARTICLE•English World-Wide A Journal of…•2016•References: 44

Existing second language acquisition research converges on a picture where learners of English exhibit marked divergence from native speakers in their use of information-packaging constructions, even at advanced stages of acquisition. This study extends the investigation of these constructions to an emerging institutionalised second language variety, Hong Kong English. Based on the Hong Kong and British components of the International Corpus of E…

  • Grammatical Change in the Verb Phrase in Australian English

Peter Collins, Xinyue Yao•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Linguistics•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Studies of grammatical change in the Late Modern English period have concentrated almost exclusively on British and American English. This paper is the first to trace grammatical changes in Australian English across the approximately two centuries from the foundation of the first British colony in Australia in 1788 to the present day, using data derived from two recently compiled corpora, ‘COOEE’ (nineteenth century) and ‘AusCorp’ (twentieth cent…

  • Colloquial features in Word Englishes

Peter Collins, Xinyue Yao•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2013•Cited by: 8

A powerful discourse-pragmatic agent of grammatical change in English since the mid-twentieth century has been the increasing acceptance of colloquialism. Little is known, however, about its influence on grammatical developments in regional varieties of World English other than the two inner circle ‘supervarieties’, British and American English. This paper reports findings from a corpus-based study of three grammatical categories known to be unde…

  • Pragmatic interpretation of the English present perfect

    Open Access•Xinyue Yao•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2013

This article discusses the interpretation of the English present perfect adopting a pragmatic approach. I show that a full interpretation of the English present perfect requires identification of the nature of current relevance, or, within a perfect state account (e.g., Nishiyama and Koenig 2010), value-assignment for a present state. I argue that the specific value of the present state is either an explicature or an implicature of the utterance …

  • The present perfect in world Englishes

    Open Access•Xinyue Yao, Peter Collins•ARTICLE•World Englishes•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 1

This paper reports on a comprehensive corpus‐based study of regional and stylistic variation in the distribution of the English present perfect. The data represents ten English varieties of both the Inner Circle and Outer Circle, covering four major text types: conversation, news reportage, academic and fictional writing. The results are discussed in light of the finding that the present perfect has been losing ground to the preterit since Late M…
