Recalibrating impact in STEM education
Effect sizes are central to evaluating intervention impact in STEM education, yet they are commonly interpreted using generic benchmarks such as Cohen's thresholds, which may misrepresent practical significance in this heterogeneous field. To address this problem, the present study derived empirical effect size benchmarks for interpreting intervention effects in STEM education. We conducted an umbrella review of meta-analyses on STEM education in…
Gender Representation in Heed and STEM Occupations
Gender stereotypes in educational materials can influence children’s and adolescents’ career aspirations, contributing to persistent occupational gender segregation. However, large-scale, longitudinal studies examining gender representation in stereotypical occupational domains in textbooks across different school subjects remain scarce. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the gender representation in two key occupational domains: science,…
Mapping Collaborations in STEM Education
In-school–out-of-school collaborations are increasingly recognized as a key mechanism for enriching STEM education. Guided by conceptual frameworks on boundary crossing and STEM learning ecologies, this scoping review maps and synthesizes findings from 470 studies and 469 programs published between 2014 and 2024, focusing on how such partnerships are reported, structured, and distributed across educational contexts. Approximately 73% of the progr…
Past Marking in Australian Aboriginal English on Croker Island
In this paper, we investigate variable past marking in Australian Aboriginal English as spoken on Croker Island, Northern Territory. Employing data from twenty speakers and both mixed-effects regression and random forests, we show that despite a high degree of individual variability the occurrence or non-occurrence of a past-marked verb is subject to conditioning factors that are known from other varieties of English, most notably lexical and gra…
Past inflection around the world
“So, I trucked out to the border, learned to say ain’t , came to find work”
Firefly is a TV series that aired in 2002 and 2003 in the United States. The series belongs to the space western subgenre, which allies science fiction and western tropes by layering, in this case, a dystopian society, space travel, standoffs in desolate landscapes, and saloon brawls. This juxtaposition of genres is reflected in the language of Firefly ’s characters in three ways: world-specific slang, Chinese code-switching, and features evoking…
Recent Grammatical Change in Postcolonial Englishes
This paper presents a diachronic analysis of genitive variation in five varieties of English. Based on a set of matching newspaper corpora from the 1960s and the early 2000s from the Bahamas, Jamaica, India, Great Britain, and the U.S., we look into variation and change in the underlying grammar of the genitive alternation, as defined by patterns of constraints affecting the variable. We employ random forests and Multifactorial Prediction and Dev…
