Constraint and content
This article re-examines the syntactic properties of the so-called shi ... de cleft construction in Mandarin Chinese, with special attention paid to the morpheme de that appears between the verb and the object (hence-forth de pre-object ). It reveals how the shi and d e pre-object morphemes at issue independently interact with focus and proposes a formal model of how the functional morphemes impose procedural constraints on and make semantic cont…
Familiar when -relatives and peculiar when -relatives in English
Typical headed relatives in English include a relative pronoun which takes the head as its antecedent. However, some modifying when -clauses in this language are peculiar relatives in that their heads are not the antecedent of when and they do not even have temporal referents. In view of the peculiarity of this type of relative clause, a novel account of the syntactic generation and interpretation of temporal when -clauses is pro- posed. Under th…
What is what if
With literature and empirical evidence, this article argues against the existing claim that what if -questions are idioms and proposes that they are the result of the syntactic and semantic combination of what and if -conditionals. With further evidence, it is argued that what can be a propositional anaphor which occurs in different contexts, rather than being restricted to what if -questions. A formal characterization of the syntactic and semant…
Associations between dimensions of empowerment and nutritional status among married adolescent girls in East Africa
Our findings suggest that investment in girls' access to information through education and mass/social media and their economic empowerment may be important contributors to their overall empowerment and nutritional status. However, caution is needed as greater autonomy may contribute to increased consumption of unhealthy foods that can contribute to overweight and obesity. Strategies to empower married adolescent girls should be tailored to their…
About what about
Although often used as diagnostic tools in discourse studies, irregular wh -questions in English, which take the form of what/how about ... ? and what/how if ... ? , have not received sufficient attention in terms of their semantic and syntactic properties. This article investigates irregular wh -questions from semantic and syntactic perspectives. Semantically, there is a topic-comment relationship between the wh- word and the rest of the sentenc…
Acupuncture Ameliorates Depressive Behaviors by Modulating the Expression of Hippocampal Iba-1 and HMGB1 in Rats Exposed to Chronic Restraint Stress
The antidepressant mechanism of acupuncture has not been fully elucidated recently. Thus, the objective of the present study is to investigate the antidepressant mechanism of acupuncture of modulating the neuroinflammation induced by high mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) in rats subjected to chronic restraint stress (CRS). Forty-four male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into control, model, escitalopram, and acupuncture group. Except for ra…
The procedural syntax of fake modification constructions in Chinese
The clitic morpheme de in Mandarin Chinese has various uses. Typically, it is cliticized to a phrase whether the phrase is nominal or adjectival; it can also occur between two noun phrases when there is no relation of semantic modification. The constructions that involve the latter use of de , known as fake modification constructions, have been theoretically characterized many a time. In the existing characterizations, the morpheme is treated eit…
