A Comparative Study of Female Engineers’ Experiences in Ireland
This article presents the first large scale quantitative study on the issue of female retention in the Irish context. In this examination of what drives women to persist or leave the industry, we identify factors such as demographics, employment conditions and workplace issues that play a role in determining the scale of Ireland's attrition problem for female engineers. The scale of experiences of sexism amongst respondents is presented as are so…
Acquisition of estar + adjective in L2 Spanish by L1 French and Portuguese speakers
This paper reports the developmental stages of the acquisition of estar in stage-level predicate constructions in the L2 Spanish grammar of native speakers of French and Portuguese. Copular verbs exist in the L1s of both learner groups; however, only in Portuguese is there an aspectual contrast, with copula selection conditions that partially differ from those of ser and estar in Spanish. The study used data extracted from the Corpus de Aprendice…
Relevance theory and the study of linguistic interfaces in second language acquisition
In this paper we address Relevance-theoretical (RT) postulates with clear potential for contributing to the substantiation of the notion of interface in second language acquisition (SLA) processes. Whether the interface is considered the locus of contact between the structural linguistic properties and syntactic operations, on one hand, and the interpretive mechanisms of the conceptual-intentional system, on the other; or understood as points of …
Promoting equitable literacy expectations in CLIL
This study explores the impact of two Service-Learning (SL) projects on student teachers’ preparation and perceptions in relation to literacy teaching in English as a foreign language within CLIL programmes. The projects offered hands-on training in preparing and delivering lessons applying Rose and Martin’s (2012) Reading to Learn (R2L) approach to support children at two Madrid primary schools implementing CLIL with high proportions of at-risk …
Developing pre-service teachers’ digital communication and competences through service learning for bilingual literacy
Learning environments have become increasingly digital in recent decades, requiring teachers and students to develop general digital competences across all educational systems and stages. This also means that for future teachers, professional digital competencies are a valuable asset that enables them to work with the technologies already fully integrated in schools and embedded in most curricula. This paper describes the use of digital communica…
Interpreting mood choice effects in L2 and L1 Spanish
The rich morphology of Spanish, such as that of tense and verbal mood, encodes a range of features leading to diverse contextual effects on interpretation, some of which are examined in the light of original experimental data in the present study. Specifically, we analyse data on the interpretation of mood in concessive structures by upper-intermediate and advanced learners of L2 Spanish, with L1 French (N=48) and L1 English (N=40), and from an L…
A literature review of critical thinking in engineering education
Developing optimum solutions to engineering problems typically relies on structured and complex thought processes that require evaluation, interpretation and opinion. Well-developed critical thinking (CT) skills are essential for dealing with the multi-dimensional nature of these problems. CT in an engineering context is well reported in teaching and learning academic literature. However, much of this is framed within theoretical and conceptual f…

Mapping the relationship between transport energy consumption and urban form characteristics for the Greater Dublin Area
Please click here to download the map associated with this article. Energy consumption and emissions from the transport sector continue to rise, adding to growing concerns about the environmental impacts caused by transport systems and related land-use patterns. Transportation and land-use are a function of one another, therefore it is often hypothesized that changing urban form will result in changes in transport energy consumption. This paper i…
