Differential impact of GenAI use on EFL learners’ digital literacy, emotions, and motivated learning behavior in Informal Digital Learning of English: A multigroup path analysis
Drawing on Bandura’s (1986) ‘triadic reciprocal’ framework of Social Cognitive Theory and incorporating Pekrun’s (2006) Control-Value Theory, this study examines the cognitive–affective mechanisms shaping EFL learners’ experiences in informal generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) environments. The research models the interactions among digital literacy, three emotions, and motivated learning behavior. The sample comprised a GenAI user group …
Generative AI and motivational pathways in informal English learning: The role of enjoyment and flow
The effectiveness of computerized dynamic assessment in improving L2 performance: A three-level meta-analysis
The growing body of research on the effects of computerized dynamic assessment (C-DA) on second language (L2) learning underscores the need for a comprehensive research synthesis to identify future research directions and inform the application of C-DA in L2 educational contexts. This meta-analysis employed a three-level modeling approach to examine the effectiveness of C-DA in improving L2 learners’ performance. It synthesized 27 effect sizes fr…
Developing and Validating a Computerized Dynamic Diagnostic Assessment of Pragmatic Competence for Chinese Learners of English
Recent initiatives have sought to integrate dynamic assessment and diagnostic assessment to facilitate language learning. Extending this line of innovation, the present study uses the example of refusals to illustrate the development and validation of a computerized dynamic diagnostic assessment of pragmatic competence (CDDA-P). To enhance the authenticity of assessed pragmatic performance, a bottom-up approach was adopted in item design, in whic…
The Acquisition of English Caused State Change Events by Chinese–English—Japanese Trilinguals: A Focus on Cross-Linguistic Influence
Aims and objectives: This study investigates how Chinese–English (C-E) bilinguals and Chinese–English–Japanese (C-E-J) trilinguals express English caused state change events (CSC), focusing on the similarities and differences between the two groups. It explores the underlying motivations with an emphasis on cross-linguistic influence, particularly the inverse typological effect of the L3 (Japanese) on the L2 (English), as modulated by L3 proficie…
Refining the processing dynamics of English compound words in L2 learners: A psycholinguistic modeling approach
Understanding how EFL learners process compound words offers important insight into the structure and dynamics of the mental lexicon. We investigated how different linguistic features—frequency, semantic transparency, and morphological structure—influence the time course of compound noun processing in Chinese learners of English. Eye-tracking data were collected from 40 advanced L2 learners while reading sentences containing compound nouns. Three…
Revisiting Emotional Effects Under Lexical Control in L2 Auditory Word Recognition Memory
Corpus Linguistics And Second Language Acquisition: Perspectives, Issues, And Findings
With the growing availability of large-scale learner corpora and the increasing reliability of automated corpus analytical tools, recent decades have witnessed a large body of empirical studies using corpus linguistic methods to investigate diverse areas of second language acquisition. Corpus Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition: Perspectives, Issues, and Findings, authored by Xiaofei Lu, is a valuable reference for corpus-based second lan…
How to say “no” in a foreign language: The role of L2 proficiency, power relations, and eliciting acts
Most studies on second language (L2) learners’ refusal strategies focus on the frequency and content of individual strategy use. However, research also reveals the fact that learners tend to use multiple strategies in a single refusal. How these strategy combinations are quantitatively distributed is a question that is under-researched. To address this gap, this study investigates individual strategies and their combinatorial patterns in the refu…
Temporal-spatial interplay in metadiscourse: Mapping organizational patterns in research article rhetoric
This study investigates interactive metadiscourse in quantitative Economics research articles across L1 Chinese, Chinese ESL, and L1 English scholars through a tripartite corpus analysis grounded in Hyland’s ( 2005 ) framework. By synthesizing the cognitive discourse analysis with the contrastive rhetoric theory, the investigation uncovers how L1-based conceptual transfer mediates spatiotemporal organization in academic texts. Results demonstrate…
The effects of textbook frequency, congruency, and word class on the processing of L2 collocations by Chinese EFL learners
This study examines the roles of L1-L2 congruency, frequency, word class, and proficiency in L2 collocation processing. An acceptability judgment task was conducted to evaluate how participants processed verb-noun and adjective-noun collocations across four levels of congruency: congruent, partially congruent, L1-only, and L2-only collocations. The findings revealed that participants were sensitive to both congruency and collocation frequency. Mo…
Investigating English Majors’ Online Learning Anxiety and Its Influencing Factors
Anxiety in second language acquisition refers to the tension or unease that students experience while learning a foreign language. Despite extensive research on anxiety in second language acquisition, little has been done to explore online learning anxiety. This study aimed to examine Chinese English majors’ anxiety and its influencing factors in online learning from the control-value theory perspective. Through a utilization of questionnaires an…
Cross-cultural Research of Speech Codes: Transitivity Processes in Corporate Social Responsibility Reports
Evolving from ethnographic research that determines what meanings are shared within a culture, studies regarding Speech Codes Theory have been conducted with implications for intercultural communication. Arguing for transitivity as speech codes in diverse cultures, this paper aims to describe and explain the transitivity attributes of English-medium Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reports by Chinese and British/American corporations, and th…
A latent profile analysis of Chinese high school students’ control and value appraisals: Associations with enjoyment, boredom, and language achievement
Alignment effect in the continuation task of Chinese low-intermediate English learners
This article aims to probe into whether low-intermediate EFL learners align their writing with an original text in a continuation task (using stories with the middle part missing). The study examined the effect of alignment on words, phrases, sentences, error rates and writing quality. Sixty low-intermediate EFL learners were divided into two groups. In the first week, group A (n=30) read the Chinese version of a story and group B (n=30) read the…
Understanding EFL reading anxiety in relation to learning motivation, attitudes and strategies for Chinese and Spanish undergraduates
Language dominance influences bilingual lexical selection quantitatively but not qualitatively in language production: Evidence from Chinese-English bilinguals
