Null Subjects, Labeling, and Linearization
Theoretical approaches to null subjects standardly focus on the narrow syntactic module. I offer a postsyntactic alternative in terms of PF deletion applying to salvage an unlinearizable derivation. Support for this alternative comes from microvariation in three closely-related West Slavic pro-drop languages spoken primarily in Poland (Kashubian, Polish, and Silesian), in which the distribution of null subjects is sensitive to the postsyntactic r…
Overt pronouns in null subject languages
Interpretive differences between overt subject pronouns relative to null subject pronouns are commonly considered a defining property of Consistent Null Subject Languages (CNSLs), in contradistinction to Partial Null Subject Languages (PNSLs). In this article, we present the results of two experimental studies which challenge this view with respect to two environments: variable binding and pronominal coreference (binding) under double embedding. …
Agreement Switch in Verb-Echo Answers
In this article, we claim that syntactic objects undergoing ellipsis can be targeted by both narrow syntactic and PF operations. We base this conclusion on experimental evidence from the interaction between single conjunct agreement and verb-echo answers in South Slavic, which we show to be derived via verb-stranding VP ellipsis. Adopting the view that Vocabulary Insertion replaces Q-variables on lexical heads (Halle 1991) and ellipsis is a synta…
Németh T., Enikő
Searching for missing arguments and the principles governing their distribution and interpretation within the depths of morphosyntactic, semantic and pragmatic theory is a quest filled with theoretical intricacies and empirical nuances. 1 While such arguments have been amply studied, they continue to present a humbling research challenge, with each answer triggering more questions, Hydra style. Highly welcome are thus contributions such as Enik N…
NP ellipsis (effects) in Polish and Hungarian
This paper offers an analysis of NP ellipsis with adjectival remnants in Polish and Hungarian based on an investigation of the featural composition of heads contained within the extended nominal and adjectival projections, as well as configurations resulting from an application of Agree and the Principle of Chain Reduction. Elliptical NPs are analysed as headed by categorising
Missing objects in special registers
Even though null definite objects are usually ungrammatical in English, they are widely used in certain special registers. This paper investigates object drop in the recipe and, to a lesser extent, match broadcasting registers in English, contributing an analysis of a substantial set of naturally occuring data, hence making it possible to verify observations from previous syntactic studies of the phenomenon, which were based on a restricted array…
