English Language Teachers’ Grit and Pronunciation Teaching Practices in a Time of Crisis
Longitudinal research contributes to the understanding of teachers’ beliefs and practices, but few such studies have examined teacher development during a time of crisis. This gap is particularly significant in pronunciation pedagogy, where research on teachers’ adaptive strategies remains limited. Building on a six-year study, this paper explores the development of second language teachers’ practices and cognitions (knowledge, beliefs, perceptio…
Cultural equity, diversity, and inclusion for academic tertiary staff
With the growing internationalisation of education, there is an ever-increasing need to embrace cultural equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in Australian tertiary education and worldwide. While much research has focused on students’ experiences in the higher education context, less is known of the experiences of academic staff. The purpose of this data-driven, qualitative study was to explore the strengths and barriers to cultural EDI at one …

Scoping review of the characteristics and implementation of routine outcome monitoring and feedback for adults and young people accessing alcohol and other drug use treatment
Efforts to examine how best to generate, present and use feedback to inform AOD treatment are needed. Optimising the use of feedback across treatment settings will require examination of the interplay between feedback characteristics and clinician, client and contextual variables. Improved attention to idiographic outcomes, benchmarks, diversity considerations, health literacy, treatment context, training, fidelity and the reporting of evaluation…
Teacher Cognitions in Second Language Pronunciation
Second language teacher cognition (SLTC) is an important construct used to investigate and understand second language (L2) teachers' inner dimensions, such as their beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge, and how these aspects connect to classroom practices. The purpose of this entry is to provide an overview of contemporary issues involved in SLTC of pronunciation teaching and learning. This overview begins with a discussion of the origins of SLTC, f…

SFL and academic apprenticeship
Australia hosts thousands of international students but, many are unprepared for postgraduate study, struggling particularly with critical and reflective writing. The subject ‘Postgraduate Critical Scholarship’ was subsequently developed as a discipline-specific support in the School of Education at an Australian University to apprentice students into postgraduate academic culture. It extends beyond the provision of English for Academic Purposes …

Putting it into context
Developing L2 learners’ productive mastery of vocabulary is a challenging task. Recent research has called for greater attention to understanding how receptive vocabulary may be transformed for productive use ( Schmitt, 2019 ). Using a design-based research methodology, this study investigated adult ESL learners’ productive oral vocabulary development through engaging them in a series of classroom workshops where they were exposed to nine target …

Post-treatment Outcomes and Changes in Health Literacy of People Discharged from Specialist Substance Use Disorder Treatment Services
Health literacy comprises an individual’s ability to adequately access, understand and utilise health information, enabling effective navigation of the healthcare system. Low health literacy is a problem for people living with substance use disorders (SUDs). This study aims to examine whether health literacy changes for people discharged from specialist SUD treatment services. Two hundred thirty-one people recruited from residential SUD treatment…
Exploring Teachers' Knowledge of Second Language Pronunciation Techniques
This study explored some of the intricate connections between the cognitions (beliefs, knowledge, perceptions, attitudes) and pedagogical practices of five English language teachers, specifically in relation to pronunciation‐oriented techniques. Integral to the study was the use of semistructured interviews, classroom observations, and stimulated recall interviews with the teachers and questionnaires with students. Findings reveal that the teache…

I never imagined” pronunciation as “such an interesting thing”
Despite extensive research conducted into language teacher education practices and outcomes, student teachers' uptake of innovative practices is still largely unexplored. This study examined the perception of 15 graduate student teachers of a unique haptic (movement and touch) pronunciation teaching method in which they were trained. Focus group interviews, semi‐structured interviews, and weekly observations were triangulated over a period of 16 …
Controlled evaluation of a brief intervention of HIV prevention among injecting drug users not in treatment
This study evaluated the effectiveness of a brief intervention (BI), a one-session motivational interview, in reducing HIV risk-taking behaviour among injecting drug users (IDU) not enrolled in any form of treatment for drug dependence. IDU were randomly assigned to either BI or a non-intervention control condition (NIC). One hundred and twenty-one subjects were successfully contacted for a 3-month follow-up and 88 subjects were followed up at 6 …
Amphetamine use and co-occurring psychological problems
There has been a substantial increase in the use of amphetamine in Australia in recent years, with many users presenting with a range of psychological symptoms including those associated with mood, anxiety and psychotic disorders. Many of these symptoms are due to the direct effect of amphetamine or occur during withdrawal and resolve rapidly. However, determining whether there is a pre-existing disorder requires a careful assessment of the tempo…
An improved brief measure of cannabis misuse
Total smoking bans in psychiatric inpatient services
There is a clear need to more effectively communicate to staff the evidence that consistently applied smoking bans do not increase patient aggression. There is also a need to communicate the benefits of smoking bans in aiding the delivery of smoking cessation care, and the benefits of both smoking bans and such care in aiding patients to stop smoking
Prosodic and multimodal markers of humor in conversation
This case study extends the findings of Pickering et al. 2009 to the domain of conversational humor. We find that, as was the case in humorous narratives, conversational humor is not marked by higher pitch or volume, increased speech rate, or significant pauses. Unlike narrative humor, conversational humor is not produced at a lower pitch and slower rate than non-humorous parts of the text. We find that smiling and laughter tend to occur with hum…

Mind the Gap
Inherent in classroom research are the inevitable, and often unanticipated, challenges experienced by researchers. This article moves beyond the main issues highlighted in the literature and identifies some of the problems the authors encountered when conducting two common methodological procedures, classroom observations and stimulated recall interviews (SRIs), as part of our dissertation research investigations. The paper first surveys what the…

Background: Smoke-free hospital policies are becoming increasingly common to promote good health and quit attempts among patients who smoke. This study aims to assess: staff perceived enforcement and compliance with smoke-free policy; the current provision of smoking cessation care; and the characteristics of staff most likely to report provision of care to patients. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey of medical, nursing, and allied staff …
Smoke-Free Recovery from Trauma Surgery
Smoking increases the risk of complications associated with orthopaedic trauma surgery, however delivery of care is low. Online interventions may provide needed smoking cessation care and promote abstinence. This study aims to examine the engagement, acceptability, and retention of an online smoking cessation program (Smoke-Free Recovery; SFR) among a sample of orthopaedic trauma patients, as well as themes around the smoking cessation process. A…
Alcohol Text Messages
Risky paternal alcohol use is associated with maternal alcohol use during pregnancy, poor fetal and infant outcomes, domestic violence and depression. This study developed 30 SMS text messages about alcohol for fathers who drink at risky levels . The text messages were developed using two motivational styles: messages presented in a second person voice and the same messages presented in a child's voice. Fifty-one fathers were recruited through so…
Latent Psychotic Symptom Profiles Amongst People Who Use Methamphetamine
The inability to distinguish clearly between methamphetamine-related psychosis and schizophrenia has led to the suggestion that "methamphetamine psychosis" does not represent a distinct diagnostic entity but rather that the drug has triggered a vulnerability to schizophrenia. We tested this possibility by exploring the latent class structure of psychotic symptoms amongst people who use the drug and examining how these latent symptom profiles corr…
Reducing Smoking Among People With Schizophrenia
Although tobacco smoking is very common among people with schizophrenia and has devastating effects on health, strategies to ameliorate the risk are lacking. Some studies have reported promising results yet quit rates are much lower than in the general population. There is a need to advance research into smoking cessation efforts among people with schizophrenia. We posed the following question to five leading international experts in the field: "…
Mental Health Hospital Admissions
Hospital admissions provide a “teachable moment”. Many patients admitted to mental health hospitals have co-existing substance misuse. As acute symptoms decline, a window of increased insight into factors that contributed to becoming unwell and admission may present. This study used this “teachable” opportunity to assess the acceptability of delivering a brief integrated motivational intervention (BIMI) to inpatients and the feasibility of delive…
Quitlink”—A Randomized Controlled Trial of Peer Worker Facilitated Quitline Support for Smokers Receiving Mental Health Services
Introduction: Although smokers with severe mental illnesses (SSMI) make quit attempts at comparable levels to other smokers, fewer are successful in achieving smoking cessation. Specialized smoking cessation treatments targeting their needs can be effective but have not been widely disseminated. Telephone delivered interventions, including by quitlines, show promise. However, few SSMI contact quitlines and few are referred to them by health profe…
They’re Going to Smoke Anyway’
Background: Addressing the high prevalence of tobacco use experienced by people with severe mental illness (SMI) requires consideration of the influence of wider cultural, socioeconomic and environmental factors. This qualitative study aimed to examine the impact of social and living environments on tobacco use and cessation by people with SMI accessing community managed mental health services. The perspectives of both staff and consumers with SM…
Protocol for an Economic Evaluation of the Quitlink Randomized Controlled Trial for Accessible Smoking Cessation Support for People With Severe Mental Illness
Introduction: Smoking is a major cause of disease burden and reduced quality of life for people with severe mental illness (SMI). It places significant resource pressure on health systems and financial stress on smokers with SMI (SSMI). Telephone-based smoking cessation interventions have been shown to be cost effective in general populations. However, evidence suggests that SSMI are less likely to be referred to quitlines, and little is known ab…
