The Development of Neural Art
Throughout the author’s career, Neural Art, which is based on the functional properties of the nervous system, has been a significant part of his artwork. Three features stimulated his artistic development: (1) nervous systems as functioning networks, (2) sequences of neural impulses that operate within these networks, and (3) the interactions of nervous systems with external environments. This has resulted in three types of artworks: (1) artist’…
Drawing Thought
This is a wonderful book. However, I had my doubts when I first looked it over, mainly because it has these dominating drawings and is without the standard margin format. I wondered why MIT Press would publish such a book. But after going through only a few pages, I realized that I had a unique and special book that would help people understand basic drawing techniques and use drawing as a tool for a very visual approach to thinking. The dominati…

Interactive Sound Installations Using Microcomputers
The author first presents the theoretical basis of his work and some thoughts on the use of computers in the arts. He then describes four interactive computer-based installations that he has completed over the past several years. While all the works contained visual components, major portions of these constructed environments were the sounds generated by the perceivers. The ways the sounds organized the spaces and the effects of these pieces on t…
Neural Art
My work, which I call neural art, is based on a scientific understanding of the nervous system. Neural art combines my interests and professional training in art and physiological psychology. I began developing these ideas about twelve years ago while I was both painting and practicing psychology. I felt that there were new problems to be solved, and I wanted to achieve a personal integration of my activities. In line with most physiological psyc…
Some Physiological Limitations on Aesthetic Experience in the Visual Arts
Any functioning system can, of course, perform only a certain set of tasks since it is constrained by its components and the structural and functional relationships among them. Thus, within the nervous system there are certain constraints that limit and, under certain conditions, dominate neural activity, including aesthetic responses. It is not the intent here to define aesthetic response in any complete manner. It should be agreed, however, tha…
