  • Dangerous Men

    Open Access•Jesper Váczy Kragh•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•2026

In 1918, Denmark opened its first high-security ward for the ‘most dangerous criminally insane and feebleminded men’. Between 1918 and 1962, 203 men were admitted to the institution. This article investigates the discussions that led to the founding of the ward and examines the social and diagnostic profiles of its inmates. Drawing on patient records and archival sources from the Danish National Archives, it traces the ward’s emergence, instituti…

  • Challenging behaviour or everyday resistance? Experienced power and physical restraints at Danish residential homes for people with intellectual disabilities

    Open Access•Stine Grønbæk Jensen, Jesper Váczy Kragh et al.•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2025•References: 13

Against this back…

It has been assumed that the Danes generally opposed radical German ideas about euthanasia of people with disabilities, especially after 1945. This article, however, will contend that a breeding ground for euthanasia was created during the early twentieth century and that many Danes …

  • Malaria fever therapy for general paralysis of the insane in Denmark

    Open Access•Jesper Váczy Kragh•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2010

This article explores the history of general paralysis and malaria fever therapy in Denmark. I argue that the small size of the country gave Danish psychiatrists excellent opportunities for performing statistical studies of general paralysis in the 19th century. In the early 1920s malaria fever therapy was introduced in Danish mental hospitals and raised hopes of a cure for paralytics. Malaria fever therapy became popular among Danish psychiatris…
