Pantheonizing the Jerusalem Haram
Analyzing the initiative to establish an Islamic–Arab–Palestinian pantheon in the holiest place in Jerusalem against the background of the Arab–Jewish conflict in Palestine, this article discusses the transformation of the Haram pantheon from an all-Islamic burial place to a Palestinian national one in which the Husayni family was given priority. Understanding decision-making regarding who was entitled to be buried in this special place is the ma…
Contested Holy Places in Israel–Palestine
Over the last twenty years, there has been a growing understanding that conflicts in or over holy places differ from other territorial conflicts. A holy site has a profound meaning, involving human beliefs, strong emotions, "sacred" values, and core identity self-perceptions; therefore a dispute over such land differs from a "regular" dispute over land. In order to resolve conflicts over holy sites, one must be equipped with an understanding of t…
Islamic Endowments in Jerusalem Under British Mandate
Yitzhak Reiter presents a picture of the role of Islam in mandatory Jerusalem through the resources of the Waqf. The prevalent image of institutionalized corruption within the Waqf system is not completely supported by the findings of the study.

The Palestinian-Transjordanian Rift
The political developments in Jordan since the events of 1970-71 shaped the Palestinian community and Transjordanian society (mostly tribal) into two conflicting ethnic groups. The Jordanian Palestinians are a political minority, while simultaneously constituting a slim demographic majority yielding economic strength through dominance in the private economic sector, a matter that is a source of heightened inter-communal tensions. Analyzing data o…
Higher Education and Sociopolitical Transformation in Jordan
Jordan's policy of higher education since the 1970s has entailed a major socio-economic transformation with vital political ramifications. A nonofficial and un-transparent affirmative action policy in the universities including admission quotas, scholarships, tuition fees and nominations of faculty members, in addition to decentralization of academic institutions, overbalanced the rate of the tribal Transjordanian community of the rural periphery…
Family Waqf Entitlements in British Palestine (1917-1948)
Using endowment deeds (waqfiyyāt) and court decisions (aḥkām) recorded in the sijill of the Sharīʿa Court of Jerusalem during the period of British rule in Palestine (1917-1948), I analyze three aspects of family Waqf: The right of females to transmit their entitlement to the next generation; the treatment of males and females; and the entitlement of orphaned grandchildren. These patterns are compared to the patterns of devolution that result fro…
