Süreyya Ağaoğlu and the emerging liberal order in early Cold War Turkey
This article discusses the life, career, and associations of Süreyya Ağaoğlu, Turkey’s first female lawyer, in the years leading up to Turkey’s watershed 1950 election, in order to understand Turkey’s liberal opposition. Are show trials always one-sided affairs? In looking at Turkey, this article argues that they can be venues where competing versions of the past are offered to the public and outcomes need not be pre-ordained. In 1960, Turkey’s government was overthrown in a military coup.
