The data infrastructure of the German Kompetenznetzwerk Bibliometrie
Academic data infrastructures facilitate bibliometric research and reporting, as they link bibliometric data with research interests. In Germany, the Kompetenznetzwerk Bibliometrie (KB), a national consortium of 22 institutions, serves this purpose by hosting, probing, and curating large-scale bibliometric raw data from commercial and open providers. Users at partner institutions regularly apply the data infrastructure in workflows. Due to its fo…

Understanding differences of the OA uptake within the German University landscape (2010–2020)
This article is the second part of the investigation of the determinants for the uptake of Open Access (OA). While the first part focusses on journal-based OA (hybrid and full OA) (Taubert et al. in Scientometrics 128(6):3601–3625, 2023), the article at hand investigates the determinants for the uptake of institutional and subject repository OA in the university landscape of Germany. Both articles consider three types of factors: the disciplinary…
Mapping the German Diamond Open Access Journal Landscape
In the current scientific and political discourse surrounding the transformation of the scientific publication system, significant attention is focused on Diamond Open Access (OA). Diamond OA is characterized by no charges for readers or authors and relies on monetary allowances and voluntary work. This article explores the potential and challenges of Diamond OA journals, using Germany as a case study. Two key questions are addressed: first, the …
Understanding differences of the OA uptake within the German university landscape (2010–2020)
This study investigates the determinants for the uptake of Full and Hybrid Open Access (OA) in the university landscape of Germany and distinguishes between three factors: The disciplinary profile, infrastructures and services of universities that aim to support OA, and large transformative agreements. The uptake of OA, the influence of the disciplinary profile of universities and the influence of transformative agreements is measured by combinin…
Open access uptake in Germany 2010–2018
This study investigates the development of open access (OA) to journal articles from authors affiliated with German universities and non-university research institutions in the period 2010–2018. Beyond determining the overall share of openly available articles, a systematic classification of distinct categories of OA publishing allowed us to identify different patterns of adoption of OA. Taking into account the particularities of the German resea…
Green Open Access in Astronomy and Mathematics
Open access (OA) to publications has become a major topic in science policy. However, electronic publication providing free access to research via the internet is more than a decade older, was invented in the 1990s and driven by parts of the scientific community. This paper focuses on two disciplines (astronomy and mathematics) in which green OA is well established. It asks how authors and readers use the central disciplinary repository and how t…
