“My Wife Says…”
The event of having a child for an academic is associated with lower research productivity for women, even when the parenting burden is shared by both male and female parents. Universities and research organizations commonly employ “family‐friendly” policies to simultaneously ease work expectations and provide flexibility in work patterns, performance, and participation. Recent trends of fathers taking more responsibility for parenting engagement…
Research Intelligence
With the growing availability of research information, analytical tools, and services, more and more dimensions of academic work can be studied to derive novel insights. Research Intelligence (RI) focuses on the collection, analysis, enrichment, and interpretation of research-related information to provide strategic insights that support decision-making at various organizational levels. It leverages tools like bibliographic databases, university …
Explaining research performance
In this article, we study the motivation and performance of researchers. More specifically, we investigate what motivates researchers across different research fields and countries and how this motivation influences their research performance. The basis for our study is a large-N survey of economists, cardiologists, and physicists in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the UK. The analysis shows that researchers are primarily motivated …
The quantification of open scholarship—a mapping review
This mapping review addresses scientometric indicators that quantify open scholarship. The goal is to determine what open scholarship metrics are currently being applied and which are discussed (e.g., in policy papers). The paper contributes to a better understanding of how open scholarship is quantitatively recorded in research assessment and where gaps can be identified. The review is based on a search in four databases, each with 22 queries. O…
Changing publication practices and the typification of the journal article in science and technology studies
In this article, we study the development of the STS journal article format since the 1980s. Our analysis is based on quantitative data that suggest that the diversity of various journal publication types has diminished over the past four decades, while the format of research articles has become increasingly typified. We contextualize these historical shifts in qualitative terms, drawing on a set of 76 interviews with STS scholars and other stake…
Exploring the relevance of Orcid as a source of study of data sharing activities at the individual-level
The Psychology of Morality
We review empirical research on (social) psychology of morality to identify which issues and relations are well documented by existing data and which areas of inquiry are in need of further empirical evidence. An electronic literature search yielded a total of 1,278 relevant research articles published from 1940 through 2017. These were subjected to expert content analysis and standardized bibliometric analysis to classify research questions and …
The Ethics Ecosystem
This paper examines the consequences of a culture of "personal ethics" when using new methodologies, such as the use of social media (SM) sites as a source of data for research. Using SM research as an example, this paper explores the practices of a number of actors and researchers within the "Ethics Ecosystem" which as a network governs ethically responsible research behaviour. In the case of SM research, the ethical use of this data is currentl…
