  • Practical Laboratory Project in Telemedicine

Open Access•Luciano Boquete, Ignacio Bravo et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2005

This paper describes a project carried out in the laboratory of Principles of Bioengineering within the Telecommunications Engineering degree (five academic years plus a final thesis). The main object of this project is to set up a portable system for the acquisition, analysis, and transmission by mobile telephony of the electrocardiogram (ECG) of an indeterminate number of patients. The network of patients is managed from a control center (CC), …

  • The Looking Glass Self

    King-To Yeung, J Levi Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2003•Cited by: 30

We test the hypothesis inspired by Mead and Cooley that one's self-perceptions are an internalization of the perceptions of the views of others, using a large set of network data from 56 naturally occurring communities. The results are compatible with an internalization model, whereby self-conceptions are instilled through interaction with high-status alters. Yet it does not seem that personality is simply an impression made in a malleable mind b…

  • Estimated condom failure and frequency of condom use among gay men

Jennifer L Thompson, Thomas J Yager et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•Cited by: 5•References: 21

OBJECTIVES. Condoms are designed to bar transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but they sometimes fail. This paper explores the effect of experience with condoms on condom failure among gay men. METHODS. Risk of condom failure (breakage or slippage) on a single occasion is estimated for four sexual acts reported over 12 months by a sample of gay New York City men (n = 741). The estimation procedure assumes that each episode in wh…

  • Sexual behavior changes and HIV antibody in a cohort of New York City gay men

    J L Martin, JEAN‐LOUIS MARTIN et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1989•Cited by: 9•References: 17

A sample of 357 gay/bisexual men, ages 20 to 65, were interviewed in 1985 regarding their sexual patterns over the course of the AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) epidemic. Within four months after the interview, men were tested for antibody to HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and 36 per cent were found positive. Cessation of receptive anal intercourse was associated with HIV negative antibody status, (OR greater than 3.0). Reducing the…

  • The impact of Aids on gay male sexual behavior patterns in New York City

    J L Martin, JEAN‐LOUIS MARTIN•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 38•References: 6

A sample of 745 gay men, ages 20 to 65, were interviewed in 1985 as part of an effort to determine the impact of the AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) epidemic on the non-ill but at-risk community. Measured in terms of the number of different sexual partners, sexual activity was reported to have declined by 78 per cent since hearing about AIDS. The frequency of sexual episodes involving the exchange of body fluids and mucous membrane cont…
