The period from the Late Roman Republic to the end of antiquity was marked by a wide interest in divination, and more broadly by an intense belief in the possibility of establishing close and personal connections with the gods. Divinatory practices underwent profound changes, accompanied by new trends in religious belief and philosophical reflection. Different religious, ethnic and cultural groups resorted to prophecy to define their respective i…

  • Artemidorus, Dream Exegesis, and the Case of the Interpolating Expert Dreamer

    Open Access•Claire Hall•ARTICLE•Mnemosyne•2022•References: 5

Origen and Prophecy presents a new reading of the concept of prophecy in the work of Origen of Alexandria (c.185-22 AD). While prophecy in classical antiquity was focused primarily on telling the future, Jewish and early Christian writers began to discuss prophets as moral leaders and sages, understanding their prophecies as moral and mystical proclamations as well as predictions. In this book, I show how Origen developed this model of prophecy u…

  • Horoscopes of the Moon

    Open Access•Claire Hall•ARTICLE•Early Science and Medicine•2021

Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos is not usually considered as a meteorological text. I examine the sections of the Tetrabiblos that deal with weather prediction and argue that Ptolemy considers it part of astrology. I show that the way Ptolemy categorises weather prediction differs significantly from other Greco-Roman writers, including Cicero ( On Divination ) and Sextus Empiricus ( Against the Astrologers ). I argue for these conclusions: first, that Ptol…

  • Inclusion in the mainstream

    Open Access•Claire Hall•ARTICLE•Housing Care and Support•2004

It looks at identifying needs, the delivery of social housing through the Housing Corporation and housing associations, and the social housing options of rented and low‐cost home‐ownership schemes. It also explores the way forward and some of the challenges involv…
