Experimental evidence from extraction for the D-shell analysis of clausal prolepsis
In clausal prolepsis constructions, a CP is ‘doubled’ by a pronoun in argument position (‘ I love it that there are handouts ’). We bring new experimental evidence to bear on long-standing questions about the structure of clausal prolepsis (Postal and Pullum 1988; Rothstein 1995). In three judgment studies, we show that clausal prolepsis constructions exhibit stronger island effects than baseline factive complements. We argue that this follows on…
Gaps That Do Not Sprout
This squib investigates a prohibition on sprouted remnants in cases of verbal Gapping with an implicit argument in the antecedent. We explore both ellipsis derivations and Across-The-Board-movement derivations for the Gapping structure to determine the underlying cause of this restriction. We find that the ellipsis derivations of verbal Gapping do not block the presence of a sprouted remnant or predict differences in the acceptability of sprouted…
There is something missing in NP and moving in DP
Processing profile for quantifiers in verb phrase ellipsis
Quantifier Raising leaves no overt marking to indicate movement has occurred, making the task of identifying when raising has occurred extremely difficult for the parser. Beyond this challenge, evidence from interpretation and judgement studies suggests that raising causes difficulty in processing. These two aspects taken together have led some to suggest that human sentence processor employs a strategy in which the construction of raised structu…
