Evaluation as a Source of Deontic Modality
The present article discusses various types of the interaction of deontic modality and evaluation, based on the semantic shift “good → necessary”. Our source data are constructions with German modal verbs and their Russian translation models containing an evaluative component. Evaluative lexical units appear in translation mainly in place of the German verb sollen, which expresses a deontic modality based on the idea of a “right” course of events…
Russian Prefixed Verbs of Motion Revisited
Although the analysis of Russian imperfective verbs like заходить ‘to go in ’ as formed by adding a prefix to the non-directional verb ходить had been rejected as far back as in 1927 by Serguei Karcevski, then discussed in detail and definitely refuted in Isačenko (1960, 1962) it does not cease to reappear. The paper demonstrates that prefixed verbs of motion in modern Russian constitute a strict system, which rigorously observes the following th…
The catalogue of semantic shifts as a database for lexical semantic typology
This paper presents an overview of a project that aims at creating a representative catalogue of crosslinguistically recurring semantic shifts in the languages of the world and at implementing this catalogue in the form of a searchable computer database. Such a catalogue is useful in several theoretical and methodological respects. First of all, both universal and language-specific semantic shifts can be considered a window onto human cognitive m…
A catalogue of semantic shifts
A formalized catalogue comprising the facts of the similar semantic shift, both synchronic and diachronic, which occurs independently in different languages and epochs, would reveal the most frequent, prominent and significant samples of semantic derivation. It might be used: (1) as a semantic plausibility criterion in linguistic reconstruction ; (2) as a basis for the semantic typology ; (3) as a linguistic evidence for cognitive processes . The…
