Constructions Built of Constructions
This study examines the most numerous type of construction presented in the Russian Constructicon, namely intensifiers. We studied intensifiers in the context of comparative constructions of inequality like Х bol’še Y ‘X is bigger than Y’ –> Х gorazdo bol’še Y ‘X is much bigger than Y’. Comparative constructions and intensifiers are usually studied separately since they belong to two distinct semantic fields. However, the interaction of two const…
The Russian Formula malo li chto
This article examines the polysemous Russian discourse formula malo li ( chto ) in relation to its source constructions and compares its functions with Korean equivalents. The study addresses the difficulty of accurately describing multi-meaning Russian discourse formulas that require careful contextual analysis, as well as the lack of lexicographical descriptions of their functional correspondences in Korean. The aim of the article is to provide…
Lexical systems with systematic gaps
The paper contributes to the typology of encoding motion events by highlighting the role of the verbal root meaning in lexicalization of motion. We focus on lexical semantics of the verbs of falling, which we study on a sample of 42 languages using the frame-based approach to lexical typology. We show that, along with downward motion, the verbs of falling regularly denote adjacent situations; and vice versa, the idea of downward motion is systema…
From data to theory
The semantic classification of over 2,200 constructions in the Russian Constructicon has emerged objectively from empirical analysis. The resulting semantic classification comports with and goes beyond frame semantics, revealing complex patterns of related constructions verified against corpus data and by a panel of native speakers. Our model of a constructicon can inform and complement existing approaches with additional findings. We detail our …
Linguistic mechanisms of colour term evolution
We investigated diachrony of distributional semantics of two competing Russian colour terms (CTs) for ‘brown’, buryj (11th century) and koričnevyj (17th century), using the Russian subcorpus of Google Books Ngram (2020) . Time-series analysis (1800–2019) of bigrams gauged each term’s frequencies of occurrence and changes in combinability with nouns for natural objects, artefacts, abstract concepts and figurative expressions. In frequency, korične…
Semantic field Seek
The paper deals with verbs and verbal constructions with the meaning ‘to seek, to search, to look for’ (the semantic field SEEK) in the Shughni language against a typological background. On the basis of dictionary data and the results of elicitation sessions with native speakers, the peculiarities of the lexicalization of the SEEK field in modern Shughni are revealed, and assumptions are made regarding the dynamics of the development of this syst…
Perfective, performative and present
The combination of perfective aspect and present tense is frequently considered as an example of semantically incompatible grams. If verbal forms including markers of both perfective aspect and present tense do exist in a language, they tend not to express present resp. perfective in the strict sense. Thus, in Russian such forms usually convey the future, as in napishu ‘I will write’. The article discusses a specific type of contexts where these …
Lexical typology and semantic maps
The paper outlines the basics of data collection, analysis and visualization under the frame-based approach to lexical typology and illustrates its methodology using the data of cross-linguistic research on verbs of falling. The framework reveals several challenges to semantic map modelling that usually escape researchers’ attention. These are: (1) principles of establishing lexical comparative concepts; (2) the effective ways of visualization fo…
On the History of Concepts
In this paper, we undertake a study of the lexical semantics of verbs with the meaning ‘hideʼ in one of the small Eastern Iranian languages of the Pamirs – Shughni, spoken in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province of Tajikistan. Data for the paper were extracted from the published dictionary of the Shughni language (Karamshoev 1988–1999), as well as field materials from 2021 (Khorugh) collected by the authors on the basis of a typological quest…

Russian Written Speech of Kazakh Students in the Reflection of Russian Learner Corpus
The article describes Russian Learner Corpus as a tool for the study of Russian of bilingual Kazakh students through the example of their written texts. The article is focused on the markers of inceptivity and verbal prefixation patterns in these texts. It examines the deviations from Standard Russian, caused by the influence of Kazakh, as well as by some other strategies of linguistic behavior of Kazakh-Russian bilinguals. The main mismatch betw…

Towards a typology of pain predicates
The semantic domain of pain seems to be unique in that, crosslinguistically, it includes few predicates that are specifically dedicated to pain (like hurt or ache ); instead, the major part of the field is constituted by lexical units drawn from other semantic domains, which are applied to pain through processes of semantic derivation (like my eyes are burning, my throat is scratching ). After discussing methodological considerations concerning d…
