  • Writing systems as modular objects: Proposals for theory design in grapholinguistics

    Open Access•Marian Neef, Martin Neef•ARTICLE•Open Linguistics•2015

This paper gives an outline of the Modular Theory of Writing Systems by answering the question: what are the elements or modules that are necessary for a writing system to work? A writing system is a notational system for a natural language. Based on this characterization, it is obvious that a necessary component of a writing system is a specific language system. What eventually constitutes a writing system in addition to this language system is …

  • Orthographic constraints on the spelling of German a -sounds

Annalen Appelt, Miriam Balestra et al.•ARTICLE•Written Language & Literacy•2015

In the framework of the Modular Writing System Theory (Neef 2005a), two levels of representation are distinguished that are relevant for the analysis of phonographic writing systems. These levels are called graphematics and systematic orthography, respectively. In this text, we focus on the latter module. As a case study, we take into account the spelling potential of the German vowels [a] (lax) and [ɑ] (tense). For this purpose, we first discuss…

  • Systematische Beschränkungen für Schreibungen im grammatischen Wortschatz des Deutschen: Der Konsonant [f]

Open Access•Miriam Balestra, Annalen Appelt et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2014

Theoretical models for the analysis of data from alphabetic writing systems typically assume that the rule apparatus to be formulated generates data from conventional orthography. Moreover, they mostly focus on a rather narrow part of the vocabulary, conceptualized as the "core vocabulary". However, it is worthwhile to take into account other parts of the vocabulary as well, like assimilated foreign words and indigenous proper names that also fol…

  • Boundaries in written representations: The potential beginning of words in German

    Marian Neef, Martin Neef•ARTICLE•Written Language & Literacy•2012

Formal theories of phonographic writing systems have to model, among other things, the regularities in the correspondences between written forms and phonological representations. In the ‘Recoding Model of Graphematics’ (Neef 2005a), correspondence rules for individual letters, supplemented with a set of constraints, serve this task. The aim of this paper is to argue that beyond these basic units, the morphological structure of written words plays…

  • Graphematics as part of a modular theory of phonographic writing systems

    Marian Neef, Martin Neef•ARTICLE•Writing Systems Research•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In writing system research, several scholars assume the existence of a component called "graphematics" (or a similar expression). Depending on the theoretical background, the concepts named in this way differ to quite a large extent, although in all cases graphematics is seen as related to, and at the same time different from, orthography. In this article, I want to discuss some of these different notions. The central aim, then, is to sketch a sp…

  • Measuring graphematic transparency: German and Italian compared

Marian Neef, Martin Neef et al.•ARTICLE•Written Language & Literacy•2011

In this article, a quantitative method to calculate the graphematic transparency of an alphabetic writing system is suggested. Graphematic transparency is a part of the traditional concept of orthographic depth, dealing with the direction from written representation to phonological representation only. Based on a thorough analysis of German graphematics given in Neef (2005a) and a tentative analysis of Italian graphematics, the respective gt-valu…

  • Die Genitivflexion von artikellos verwendbaren Eigennamen als syntaktisch konditionierte Allomorphie

    Open Access•Marian Neef, Martin Neef•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2006

Based on Eisenberg's (2000) insight that German has four genders instead of three, genitive singular inflection turns out to be driven by gender alone. The concept of inflection classes can be dispensed with for this subject. However, as has been noticed, proper names disturb this clear picture because a subset of female proper names seems to vacillate between zero inflection as is typical of female nouns and s -inflection as is typical of mascul…

  • Die Graphematik des Deutschen

Marian Neef, Martin Neef•BOOK•Die Graphematik des Deutschen•2005

Graphematics is the part of a theory of writing systems that refers to the relationship between written forms and sound forms. Essentially, the point at issue is how written forms can be represented in sound. Accordingly, the study examines the phonetic correspondence potential of all the letters of the German alphabet, as well as the lengthening and sharpening phenomena reflected in the system of written German. The study formulates essential re…

  • The relation of vowel letters to phonological syllables in English and German

    Marian Neef, Martin Neef•ARTICLE•Written Language & Literacy•2005

Assuming that a writing system is inevitably dependent on a language system, the main function of written representations is to give access to the basic representations of the language system. In this paper, I want to deal with graphematic phenomena, i.e. the relations of written representations to corresponding phonological representations. In particular, I will delve into the relation of written representations to the phonological factor of the…

  • A non-universal approach to English inflectional morphology

    Open Access•Marian Neef, Martin Neef•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2001•References: 19

This paper proposes an analysis of the English plural and possessive within a declarative model of morphology called word design that employs unviolable constraints only to explain the well-formedness of regular forms. An advantage of this conception is that only those aspects of linguistic knowledge are shifted onto UG that are underdetermined by the linguistic input of language learners. The plural and the possessive, which have quite similar e…

    Open Access•Marian Neef, Martin Neef•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•1996

Les mots du type Gehopse, Geflunkere, Gebirge, en allemand, sont des substantifs derives dont l'analyse du ge- initial et du schwa final pose un probleme pour la plupart des analyses generatives qui s'averent souvent soit empiriquement soit theoriquement insatisfaisantes. L'A. propose ici une analyse descriptive du modele de formation de lexeme Gehopse en se basant sur la theorie de la conception de mot (word design). Cette approche a pour partic…
