His writings helped shift the perspective on the roots of Afrikaans beyond Dutch to the structure and vocabulary of Khoekhoe, to Portuguese Creole, and to Malay varieties. This volume contains a selection of Den Besten’s most important papers – some of which originally appeared in less accessible journals – concerning the struct…

Les As. analysent la complementation infinitive en hollandais standard. Ils resument tout d'abord la classification traditionnelle des complements infinitifs en trois groupes : om + te-infinitif, infinitif simple et te + infinitif ; puis examinent le statut equivoque de te + infinitif. Ils discutent des conditions sous lesquelles l'Extraposition Restante est possible et concluent sur les consequences de cette etude pour la Theorie de Controles

The Verbal Complex in Continental West Germanic
There are ten parts of speech, and they are all troublesome. An average sentence, in a German newspaper, is a sublime and impressive curiosity; it occupies a quarter of a column; it contains all the ten parts of speech-not in regular order, but mixed; it is built mainly of compound words constructed by the writer on the spot, and not to be found in any dictionary- six or seven words compacted into one, without joint or seam- that is, without hyph…
