  • Scope as a Source for Non‐Incremental Effects

Open Access•Fabian Schlotterbeck, Oliver Bott•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2026

Incrementality is one of the hallmarks of realtime language comprehension. It contrasts sharply with another feature of language comprehension, the high degree of context dependence exhibited by many expressions calling for global adaptations to the larger discourse context. The present article highlights the importance of the semantic notion of scope for the interpretation of operators of various sorts. We review a number of non‐incremental effe…

  • Two types of abductive causal reasoning in discourse processing

  • Cataphoric resolution of projective content

    Open Access•Torgrim Solstad, Oliver Bott•ARTICLE•Semantics and Pragmatics•2024

We present evidence from three rating experiments showing that what we call occasion verbs (e.g., thank, criticize, congratulate) allow for the cataphoric resolution of projective content more broadly than trigger types discussed in previous research. Experiments 1 and 2 used methods established by Tonhauser et al. (2018) to show that occasion verbs do indeed pattern with other well-known triggers with respect to projectivity and at-issueness. Fu…

  • Implicit causality and consequentiality of action verbs

Open Access•Torgrim Solstad, Oliver Bott•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Language Sciences•2023

Investigating Implicit Causality (I-Caus) and Implicit Consequentiality (I-Cons) biases associated with action verbs (e.g., Peter praised/healed Mary because/and so ...), this paper sheds light on the nature of the coreference and coherence biases associated with Implicit Causality verbs. We provide evidence in support of the Two-Mechanism Account, according to which I-Caus and I-Cons are driven by two different mechanisms: While I-Caus derives f…

  • Discourse expectations

    Open Access•Oliver Bott, Torgrim Solstad•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 62

This article presents a linguistic account explaining particular mechanisms underlying the generation of expectations at the discourse level. We further develop a linguistic theory – the Empty Slot Theory – explaining the phenomenon of implicit verb causality. According to our proposal, implicit causality (IC) verbs introduce lexically determined slots for causal content of specific types. If the required information is not derivable from the cur…

  • Empty-Set Effects in Quantifier Interpretation

Open Access•Oliver Bott, Fabian Schlotterbeck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2019

This paper proposes a novel, cognitively motivated theory of natural language quantification and presents experimental evidence for it. Taking into account recent findings from number cognition the theory readily explains (1) that the restrictor argument of natural language quantifiers universally has a domain-relativizing function and (2) that monotone decreasing quantifiers are often more difficult to process than increasing quantifiers. In the…
