  • Marking definiteness in an articleless language: The role of the domain restrictor KU in Korean

    Open Access•Arum Kang•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics 語言暨語言學•2021

The main purpose of this paper is to identify the novel type of Korean definiteness marker. Especially I show that Korean KU which originated from the morphological demonstrative ‘that’, instantiates a solid pattern of distribution of definiteness marker. Mainly focusing on the semantico-pragmatic role of KU, the proposal comprises three main parts: (i) Given that Korean employs distinct devices teased apart into uniqueness (i.e. referential use)…

  • From inquisitive disjunction to nonveridical equilibrium: Modalized questions in Korean

    Open Access•Arum Kang, Yoon et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2020•References: 21

The goal of the present study is to identify a novel paradigm of epistemic modal operator derived from disjunction . Our main data involves an inquisitive disjunction marker nka in Korean, the presence of which enhances a speaker’s epistemic uncertainty and forms a modalized question. We show how nka contributes the modal effects in question within a theory of nonveridicality. In particular, we propose that the prerequisite of nka are non-homogen…

  • Vowel Production and Perception: Hyperarticulation without a Hyperspace Effect

    Open Access•D H Whalen, Harriet S Magen et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2004•Cited by: 3•References: 33

The ability of speakers to exaggerate speech sounds (“hyperarticulation”) has led to the theory that the targets themselves must be hyperarticulated. Johnson, Flemming, and Wright (1993) found that perceptual “best exemplar” choices for vowels were more extreme than listeners' own productions. Our first experiment, using their procedure, only partially replicated their results. Low vowels showed a higher F1, consistent with hyperspace. Front vowe…
