  • Fractals and the World Religions Paradigm

    Perry Schmidt-Leukel, Perry Schmidt‐Leukel•ARTICLE•Modern Believing•2024

The paper analyses the critical deconstruction of the concept of ‘religion’ and the ‘world religions paradigm’. Following Paul Hedges, it distinguishes between soft and hard deconstruction, opting for the first. It shows how John Hick’s version of religious pluralism (in the wake of Wilfred Cantwell Smith) fits in well with an understanding of religions as non-static, internally diverse and structurally entangled traditions. This view is further …

  • Non-dualism as the Foundation of Dualism: The Case of Shinran Shōnin

    Open Access•Perry Schmidt-Leukel, Perry Schmidt‐Leukel•ARTICLE•Journal of Dharma Studies•2024

Starting from the allegation of the Pure Land tradition “as a deviant form of Buddhism,” the paper looks at non-dualist and dualist features in the teachings of the Japanese medieval Pure Land master Shinran Shōnin (1173–1263). It is suggested that Shinran should be understood within the Mahāyāna framework of the two truths or realities ( satyadvaya ). Shinran retains both perspectives in a paradoxical way implicating that non-dualism needs to be…

  • Reciprocal Illumination and the Discovery of Fractal Patterns in Religious Diversity

    Open Access•Perry Schmidt-Leukel, Perry Schmidt‐Leukel•ARTICLE•International Journal of Hindu…•2024

This essay presents Arvind Sharma’s concept of “reciprocal illumination” as an innovative defense of interreligious comparison, showing that the comparative approach is still meaningful despite its currently widespread critique. In discussing Sharma’s concept, the essay focuses on the internal diversity of religious traditions, asking whether “reciprocal illumination” is possible because religious diversity is apparently not entirely at random bu…

  • Religion: Historical Fact or Interpretive Theory? A Response to Hubert Seiwert

  • Pluralisms and the Issue of the Third (tṛtīya)

    Open Access•Perry Schmidt-Leukel, Perry Schmidt‐Leukel•ARTICLE•International Journal of Hindu…•2021

In the past, all the major religious traditions, including their numerous branches and sub-traditions, have usually claimed their own unique superiority. 1 Hence, contemporary efforts to conceive the relationship between religions in a pluralistic and egalitarian manner 2 need to critically confront the specific doctrinal foundations on which the superiority-claim of their respective tradition rests. This implies that pluralist positions need to b…

    Open Access•Perry Schmidt‐Leukel•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2008

  • On Claimed “Orthodoxy”, Quibbling With Words, and Some Serious Implications: A Comment on the Tilley‐d'costa Debate About Religious Pluralism

    Open Access•Perry Schmidt‐Leukel•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2008

The article provides critical comments on three features of the recent debate between Terrence W. Tilley and Gavin D'Costa in Modern Theology . The use of the Vatican document Dominus Iesus as a parameter of “Christian” or even “Roman Catholic orthodoxy” is criticized as being presumptuous and highly questionable. Further it is argued that Tilley's and D'Costa's disagreement is less substantial than they claim and is largely rooted in contradicto…

  • Buddhism and the Idea of Human Rights: Resonances and Dissonances

    Perry Schmidt-Leukel, Perry Schmidt‐Leukel•ARTICLE•Buddhist-Christian Studies•2006

Buddhism and the Idea of Human Rights:Resonances and Dissonances1 Perry Schmidt-Leukel In 1991 L.P.N. Perera, Professor of Pāli and Buddhist Studies in Sri Lanka, published a Buddhist commentary on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In this commentary Perera tries to show that, in the Pāli canon, i.e. the canonical scripture of Theravāda Buddhism, for every single article of the Human Rights Declaration a substantial parallel or at least …

  • Gott ohne Grenzen: Eine christliche und pluralistische Theologie der Religionen

    Perry Schmidt-Leukel, Perry Schmidt‐Leukel•BOOK•Gott Ohne Grenzen•2005

    Open Access•Perry Schmidt-Leukel, Perry Schmidt‐Leukel•ARTICLE•Studies in World Christianity•2003•References: 2

In his most recent publication the highly renowned sociologist Peter Berger presents his personal interpretation of the Christian creed. In the second chapter, where Berger speaks about belief in God, he describes his understanding of the Christian faith by contrasting it with the Buddhist doctrine of the three marks of existence (tilakkhana), that is, the teaching that all things are impermanent (anicca), unsatisfactory or suffering (dukkha) and…
