Artificial Intelligence in the Museum Experience
This article examines how artificial intelligence is transforming the contemporary museum from a static repository of objects into a dynamic system of interpretation, participation, and imagination. Through a qualitative comparative analysis of three emblematic case studies from Beijing, Turin, and Cambridge, the study explores how different cultural, political, and epistemological frameworks shape the integration of AI in museological practice. …
The Secret History of the Mongols. A Digital History Approach
The increasingly large volume of academic literature analysing various aspects of the SHM makes it increasingly dif cult for scholars to access all academic literature written worldwide. This research aims to combine historical methods and computational techniques to make the SHM machine-processable and, thus, machine-understandable.The parsing of the critical edition by Paul Pelliot (1949) and the English translation by Igor de Rachewiltz (2006) …
Data-Driven Approach to Understanding Complex Urban Phenomena
Cities are increasingly recognized as complex systems, emerging through conditional and history-dependent urban processes. To understand a complex urban phenomenon to the point where we can act on it, we need a quantitative yet holistic approach. In this paper, we report on a preliminary study on the gentrification of H Street NE in Washington, DC, USA. Popular accounts claim that this started in 2016, with wealthier new residents displacing poor…
The World as Seen from Venice (1205-1533) as a Case Study of Scalable Web-Based Automatic Narratives for Interactive Global Histories
This introduction is both a statement of a research problem and an account of the first research results for its solution. As more historical databases come online and overlap in coverage, we need to discuss the two main issues that prevent 'big' results from emerging so far. Firstly, historical data are seen by computer science people as unstructured, that is, historical records cannot be easily decomposed into unambiguous fields, like in popula…
Provenance and Validation from the Humanities to Automatic Acquisition of Semantic Knowledge and Machine Reading for News and Historical Sources Indexing/Summary
This paper, as a conlcusion to this special issue, presents the future work that is being carried out at NTU Singapore in collaboration with Microsoft Research and Microsoft Azure for Research. For our research team the real frontier research in world histories starts when we want to use computers to structure historical information, model historical narratives, simulate theoretical large scale hypotheses, and incent world historians to use virtu…
Digital Maps and Automatic Narratives for the Interactive Global Histories
We describe a vision of historical analysis at the world scale, through the digital assembly of historical sources into a cloud-based database, where machine-learning techniques can be used to summarize the database into a time-integrated actor-to-actor complex network. Using this time-integrated network as a template, we then apply the method of automatic narratives to discover key actors (‘who’), key events (‘what’), key periods (‘when’), key l…
Linguistic Contact in Prehistoric Italy
This paper explores possible connections between the Indo-European roots *yem-/*jem- and *am- (*me-) and the Etruscan stem am- through the analysis and reconstruction of the pre-Latin etymology of the Italian placename Imola (Bologna, Emilia-Romagna). The evaluation of plausible links between Indo-European (Italic and, especially, Celtic) and Etruscan in this area, in the specific field of historical toponomastics, could allow relevant considerat…
The Jews in Modon and Coron during the second half of the fifteenth century
The region of Messenia in the south-western Peleponnese, with its two main port towns of Coron and Modon, was under Venetian rule for nearly 300 years, from the early thirteenth to the end of the fifteenth century. The presence of Jews and their occupations are attested by the descriptions of foreign travellers, as well as in Venetian official documents. This study focuses on the last half-century of Venetian rule – the second half of the fifteen…
Centre, Region, Periphery. Medieval Europe Basel 2002. Volume 1
The Medieval and Later Archaeology opens up different and diverse viewpoints about the development and problems of structures, which have disappeared or survived in all the modern centres and regions of Europe. Traditional areas were characterised by cultural, economic, religious, and ethnic factors. Archaeology is able to show the growth, the change or the disappearance of special zones and centres. This main theme is presented in six sections. …
