Assessment and characterization of Origanum vulgare essential oil in highly viscous polymeric dispersions for cleaning cultural heritage stone materials
HVPDs with Origanum vulgare EO provide a biocidal alternative for stone conservation. • PVA-borax dispersions enhance EO and carvacrol stability. • 1 H NMR and rheology reveal EO effects on HVPD microstructure and viscoelasticity. • Biofilm removal efficacy confirmed by ATP bioluminescence. Stone biodeterioration caused by microbial colonisation poses significant challenges to the conservation of cultural heritage. Here, we investigate highly vis…
Una stele ad occhi sudarabica e i primordi della ricerca archeologica italiana nello Yemen
The squeeze paper of a small South Arabian monument, belonging to the type known as an Eye stele, made in Ṣanʿāʾ in March 1927, and donated in 2020 to the Museum of Oriental Art/Museum of Civilizations, documents a find whose original has gone probably lost, and also witnesses an important moment in the history of Italian relations with Yemen, conducted also through archaeological research
A miniaturized method for HPLC-MS/MS identification of wine markers in figured pottery
Innovative HPLC-MS/MS miniaturized method for organic residue analysis of wine markers in archaeological matrices. • Sustainable clean-up method based on dLLME and minimization of solvent usage. • Application to very low amount of pottery sample (35 mg). • Validation on historical figure pottery samples from pre-Roman area (Imag-ORA project). The study of Organic Residue Analysis (ORA) in archaeological pottery aims to detect traces of organic ma…
Imaging Diagnostics Coupled with Non-Invasive and Micro-Invasive Analyses for the Restoration of Ethnographic Artifacts from French Polynesia
In this paper, two different objects from the ethnographic collection of the museum of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Rome), a Polynesian barkcloth (tapa) and a Polynesian headdress in feathers (pa’e ku’a), were investigated to characterize the materials, to evaluate their state of conservation and address the restoration activities. Imaging methods such as multispectral imaging, 3D ultraviolet induced fluorescence and s…
Dyes of a Shadow Theatre
Tholu Bommalu are typical leather puppets of the traditional Indian shadow theatre. Two of these objects are part of a collection in the International Puppets Museum “Antonio Pasqualino” (Palermo, Sicily, Italy), which can count on one hundred-seventy-three of artifacts. These Indian puppets were investigated to obtain information related to the use of dyes for their manufacturing through a multi-technical approach exploiting the combination of h…
