  • Experiment as Spectacle

Open Access•Chris Babits•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•2026

This article examines the first British season of The Traitors through the cultural and historiographic afterlives of Cold War social psychology. Rather than treating the series as a simple popularization of canonical experiments, it argues that reality television operationalizes and intensifies the dramatic logics of mid‐twentieth‐century behavioral science. The studies of Solomon Asch, Stanley Milgram, and Philip Zimbardo emerged from postwar a…

  • Masculinizing Mormon Patriarchs

    Open Access•Chris Babits•ARTICLE•Church History•2026

This article analyzes how A. Dean Byrd, an assistant commissioner of LDS Social Services, advanced reparative therapy for Latter-day Saint (LDS) men at the turn of the twenty-first century. Byrd argued that Mormon men’s “unwanted same-sex attractions” stemmed from deficient gender identities that could be “repaired” by cultivating traditional masculinity. Rather than originating these ideas, he synthesized gender-essentialist themes from LDS past…

  • The Specter of Female Masculinity

    Open Access•Chris Babits•ARTICLE•Modern Intellectual History•2024•References: 4

Starting in the 1970s, the “ex-gay movement,” a loose collection of conservative Christian counselors and therapists, experienced sizable growth in the United States. Importantly, women played a prominent role in the expansion of the ex-gay movement in the ensuing decades, both as counselors and as counselees. This article highlights the tension that arose between the patriarchal gender norms and the role women counselors played in the ex-gay mov…

  • Demons in San Francisco Bay

    Chris Babits•ARTICLE•Pacific Historical Review•2024

In 1967, street minister Kent Philpott began outreach to lesbian, gay, and bisexual hippies in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. Over the next decade, he counseled those who purportedly wanted out of what he referred to as “the gay lifestyle,” combining charismatic religious beliefs in demons, divine healing, and glossolalia with psychological theories on gender and child development. This article examines Philpott’s efforts to provid…

  • A war against the natural order

    Chris Babits•ARTICLE•History of Psychology•2023•Cited by: 1

This article situates Joseph Nicolosi's first book, Reparative Therapy of Male Homosexuality , in historical context. Nicolosi, a Catholic clinical psychologist, was one of the most vocal practitioners of sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) from the early 1990s until his death in 2017, and in these decades, the Christian Right became a key supporter of SOCE. In this article, I argue that two features of Nicolosi's book appealed to the Christ…
